Wonderful, and not at all outdated!

One of the reviewers here called Barfield 'a product of his time' and suggested that now he's useful only for practical use, not for contemporary scientists and theorists. I have to disagree, and that's why I'm writing this review.

1) Barfield's views on co-evolution of language and consciousness may not be widely accepted today, but surely they're not 'outdated'. His is simply an alternative theory of language history, and 'alternative' doesn't mean 'wrong'. It isn't 'naive' either: he only notes some rules at work in different languages (such as the tendency to greater abstraction), and applies them to poetry. Nowhere does he regard the metahistory of language as linear, and nowhere does he speak of 'primitive' times, or of evolution towards greater complexity in language, etc.

2) Barfield's theory of metaphor is very stimulating and not at all discredited today. Maybe the former reviewer read too much Donald Davidson who regards Barfield's theory invalid, but for example Paul Ricoeur often cites Barfield approvingly. So it's all a matter of scientific paradigm one works in.

I could go on forever, but it'd be better if you didn't trust anyone and simply read some Barfield. Don't read him with 'a priori' knowledge of his being outdated - simply read and evaluate his every argument for yourself to see if it's valid. Theories come and go, but thoughtful books remain.

Perennial and Profound

By his own admission, Owen Barfield's writings can't be organized into "early" and "late" periods. He claimed that from the very first publications to the last, he was explicitly or implicitly working out his understanding of the evolution of human consciousness. His second published book, _Poetic Diction_, concerns the study of language as the record of the changing human experience of the world.
In _Poetic Diction_, Barfield argued that:
1. One defining effect of poetry is to "arouse aesthetic imagination"
2. A significant result of the interaction with the language of the poem is that the reader's awareness of the world is permanently expanded
3. The expansion of the reader's awareness correlates to the poet's own awareness of the world as articulated in the poem
Barfield supposed, further, that what may be prosaic to the author may still have a "poetic" effect on the reader, i.e., expanding the reader's awareness of the world. One consequence of these facts, Barfield argued, is that by reading, the reader perceives the world as the author perceives - or perceived - it. And if the text being read is a classical Latin text, or a Sanskrit text, for example, then the reader may experience very startling glimpses of the world as a result.
What he went on to argue was that, if we grant that this effect of poetic diction on our awareness of the world is a real effect, then we cannot escape the conclusion that the world as the authors of the Latin and Sanskrit texts was a very different world than our own. Further, he argued that one could trace those differences in the changes that languages have undergone since human languages have been recorded. Finally, by studying these changes, said Barfield, one sees that human consciousness in its first expressions in language was almost wholly perceptual and figurative.
Barfield then argued that the "poetic effect" of such ancient texts was that they make available to the reader an experience of the world that correlates to their concrete and figurative language, and that world is one that couldn't have been produced analytically and self-consciously - for instance, by superstition or some early attempts at scientific theorizing. Just as our language today expresses in myriad ways what we take to be real, so the ancient languages too.
Thus Barfield's conclusions about *poetry* are nothing at all like what contemporary academic literary theory concludes, because Barfield's conclusions are equivalent to a theory of knowledge - while contemporary literary theory denies implicitly that a theory of knowledge is even possible.
As literary theory, then, _Poetic Diction_ is only marginally relevant, if even that, because literary theorists no longer concern themselves with knowledge. As a theory of knowledge, and as a study of the significance of language and the evolution of human consciousness, _Poetic Diction_ remains a seminal work, the challenges of which have yet to be realized in but a few works even today.

Forgotten Classic..70 years ahead of its Time!

This book...along with a very few others (like Marshall McLuhan's UNDERSTANDING MEDIA)...deserves its reputation as an underground classic treasured by all those who take a serious interest in Language Studies. Barfield's insights into the deep structure of metaphors as the real engine of a given language's history are only now being studied in laboratories dedicated to mapping language functions in the human brain. It has been kept in print for 50 years (well beyond the lifespan of similar books on philosophy and linguistics of its time) for one reason...it has been passed on from teachers to students as a ritual gift that has the power to shatter a mind and transform its understanding of its own workings. It will still be read when the next millenium ends

Simple and fun book for toddlers

It's always a struggle finding good indian books for kids. Something that can help kids learn about Indian culture and still be engaging to a small child is a feat on its own. This ebook accomplishes just that. My 2 yr old son loves all the rhyming and the colorful illustrations. It's short and sweet, yet has all the catch words for Diwali that a child is excited about - food, fireworks and puja. Waiting for more of such books in print as well from the author, Aneeka Patel!

Nice book!

Great attempt to present India's most popular festival to yound kids. The illustrations are cute and the rhymes make it easy for parents to engage kids in the book. I would have liked to see the mythological aspect of the festival highlighted more- Indian Gods, Goddesses and their feats would be particularly interesting to young kids! Perhaps in a subsequent book:)

Women's Hearts Broken Open

In Catholic Women Speak faithful Catholic Women break open their hearts to share extremely personal and well informed essays on issues that Catholic feminists face. Many of these offerings are heartbreaking yet it is clear none of these women have lost heart in the church they love. Actually some of these women have converted to Catholicism as adults. The book deals with the tough issues of our day such as defining family, concerns about accepting LGBT Catholics as well as the acceptance of women in ministry. Human sexuality is very thoughtfully considered in several of these essays. It may seem odd to say but I found this book to be a real page turner. Really, I was enthralled by the level of commitment that each of these women are to making the Catholic Church a place for equality and justice. You will want to share this book with all the women and men in your life.

A powerful and prophetic book!

This powerful and important book presents the insights, experiences, and wisdom of Catholic women from around the world. They are all women who claim, profess, and practice their Catholic faith, but who often feel frustrated by the lack of agency they are afforded in the church they love.Although this book was prepared specifically to be available at the time of the 2015 Vatican Synod on the Family (at which women are not allowed to be delegates or to vote), the concerns the authors express are timeless. While there are some really deep ideas in this volume, it is very accessible to the general reader. While some of the authors are well known writers and scholars, others are "voices from the pews." ALL are worth listening to, and all have wisdom to share. To read these essays is to make new friends. I am grateful to them for opening themselves to us.

About the Author
Frits van Paasschen is a seasoned global executive and the author of The Disruptors' Feast. His thirty years of experience inside global companies has afforded him a unique perspective on the current trends that are impacting business around the world. Frits shares his deep understanding of the forces that are disrupting the status quo to help businesses evolve and thrive in changing environments.

Frits served as CEO of Starwood Hotels and Resorts from 2007-2015. Before that, he spent three years as CEO at Coors Brewing Company. Frits also held several management positions at Nike, ultimately becoming Nike's President of Europe, Middle East, and Africa. Prior to working for Nike, he worked in finance in Disney's Consumer Products Division. While Frits has a long history of executive roles, his career began in management consulting. At The Boston Consulting Group and McKinsey & Company, he primarily served retail and consumer clients.

Advising on strategic direction is a passion of Frits' and he has served on a variety of boards throughout his career. He has been a Non-Executive Director at Barclays (FTSE) and as a member of the board of Directors of two NYSE-listed companies, Jones Apparel and Oakley. While at Nike, Frits served as Chairman of the European-American Industrial Council, and he later served on the boards of the U.S.-India and U.S.-China business councils. For several years, he was a member of the board of the Center for Environmental Leadership in Business at Conservation International.

Frits holds a BA in Economics and Biology from Amherst College and an MBA from Harvard Business School. At Harvard, he was also a Teaching Fellow in Economics. Originally from the Netherlands, Frits holds dual U.S. and Dutch citizenship. A passionate traveler, he speaks five languages and has visited more than 110 countries. In his free time, he enjoys endurance sports, including marathons and triathlons. He has been married 25 years and has three children.

As a person who has always been fascinated by how cities around the world evolve alongside global trends, this book was loaded with new insights and interesting stories. I found the advice for businesses to "take a city-view of the world" quite compelling. A thoroughly enjoyable read. His prose is precise and eloquent. The author analyzes broad trends and then hones in on the critical thinking required to understand and succeed in an increasingly interconnected multi-cultural 24-hour business world. Frits van Paasschen demonstrates (1) a rather unique cultural and intellectual sensitivity, (2) the work ethic of a long endurance runner and (3) a commendable passion for environmental causes. Despite his apparent, but never boasted of, success in business, the memoir is more "teach" than "preach". In some ways, the book provides a first rate classroom experience with a topnotch professor. THE Book for Oilfield Newcomers

In attempting to get quickly up to speed on the oil business for the purpose of participating in a few wells as a (very) small investor, I bought about ten books of various sorts. This is one of them, and has turned out to be the one I refer to the most.

First, let me say that there are two different types of books on drilling for oil/gas. Broadly, they are books that concentrate mainly on the financial and legal structure of oil deals and books that concentrate on where it is and how to get it out of the ground. This book is of the second sort.

The "nontechnical" part of the title is only partly true. Some of the descriptions are sufficiently technical to impart a working understanding of the operations in the field. I, for instance, have been going to our rig (now drilling) and asking questions ("What's that blue thing?"), then coming home and reading about what I was told ("The jar is a section of pipe that either mechanically....").

Same with the drilling reports I receive.... I can look up that part of the drilling operation (ie, "sliding") and get a much better understanding of what's happening. A book comes in handy, after all, the tool pushers out on the rigs seem to be men of few words.

There is also a pretty good basic course in petroleum geology in the first thirteen chapters. And, the science (art?) of geophysics gets a good once-over, too, though I confess I've not paid much attention to it yet.

There are chapters on reservoirs, completion, offshore, production, workover, and more, all of which is written at the same level, and much of which I've not read in depth, only scanned. I'll read it as we get there out in the field.

This is a sufficiently information-dense book that actually sitting and reading it from cover to cover won't realistically happen for most folks, no matter how involved. It's more of a textbook and reference resource.

There are lots of diagrams and drawings and pictures (probably three hundred) and they help a lot. The lengthy glossary is OK, though I've not found a petroleum business glossary that seems to be truly comprehensive. (That was written before I found, and ordered, the comprehensive "Dictionary of Petroleum Exploration, Drilling & Production" by who else but Norman J. Hyne, Ph.D.,.... and nope, I have no axe to grind here; and yes, I have noticed that Norman seems to favor long titles). The folks in the oil business rely very heavily on their own language that is a combination of truly technical terminology, oilman slang and everything in between. A glossary is handy. Also be forewarned that the business uses lots of abbreviations, and they seem to change somewhat from company to company, so that a glossary won't ever have all of the abbreviations in use in the field.

There are some other books that do a pretty good job on a more basic level, including "Money In The Ground" by John Orban, III (which also includes deal structure), but, if you are looking for a book that is deep enough to give you a good understanding of the many various aspects of drilling for oil, this is the book.

Easy as pie.

The nontechnical guide arrived in the mail in the speedy fashion typical of Amazon. I ripped into the packaging, withdrawing my hardbound book on Petroleum knowledge. I quickly flew threw the pages of the book, noting how the information was presented. Well organized according to subject, ie Geology, exploration, Drilling and Production, each one of these areas of the oil industry was explained in simple, easy to understand language, and would allow this book to be used as a class room text. There were many pictures, diagrams and drawn out explanations about the subject being explained. The material presented information in a specific area and in a manner that was easy to absorb, find again and use.

The book would allow me to become the oilman of my dreams, at least in my head. I have just finished reading the book, taking about a week or two to do so, and inclulded many margin comments in my book. This item was a good purchase, in that it provided the information I needed in a manner that I could use. There were many recommended readings in other publications. I would recommend this book for all readers, except the hardened oil man with years of experience. For him I am sure there is another source of information.
