Review
An expansive and compelling collection....In 40 short essays mixing the sociological, theological, and sometimes deeply personal, the writers raise a number of weighty concerns....[Catholic Women Speak] brings together women from a range of professional fields and places around the world to express their views on the numerous and complex problems being faced by families. --National Catholic Reporter

One of the strengths of the volume is the plurality of voices, which do not speak with a single, unified opinion on controversy. Recurring themes do abound, such as the particular problems of poverty and motherhood, or the need for mercy in the aftermath of divorce, but there are some tensions between voices in the book. This is all the better, really, to reflect the complexity of women s live.
...I can easily see this book being valuable for pastors and pastoral associates, for parish book clubs, for academics to use in their classrooms when dealing with perennially hot-button topics. --DT - Daily Theology

By Rose M Berger
On the eve of the Synod on the Family at the Vatican in Rome, involving 279 bishops from more than 120 nations, as well as 17 married couples and 17 auditors and other non-voting representative, the Catholic Women Speak Network releases an amazing collection of 44 Catholic women's voices demanding to be heard. Some say the Synod will define Pope Francis' papacy. This collection of short, very readable essays should be part of that defining moment. Written in four sections--Traditions and Transformations; Marriage, Families and Relationships; Poverty, Exclusion and Marginalisation; Institutions and Structures--and edited under the leadership of Tina Beattie, director of the Digby Stuart Research Centre for Religion, Society and Human Flourishing at the University of Roehampton in the UK, readers travel with women from the barrios of Buenos Aires to a dialogue between Catholic and Muslim women in Ireland to academic discussions of the Catholic Intellectual Tradition and Women, to young women in ministry to lesbian couples, celibate lesbians, celibate sisters, mothers of families, women with husbands, Indian women, African women, Australian and Filipina women. All Catholic. All women. All making case that it is time to to bring women's voices to the center of Catholic teaching and decision-making. Otherwise, writes Italian Lucetta Scaraffia, we are a church "breathing with only one lung." Brilliant! Many of the contributors are in Rome now distributing this groundbreaking book to those gathered for the Synod.

Women's Hearts Broken Open
By Marianne
In Catholic Women Speak faithful Catholic Women break open their hearts to share extremely personal and well informed essays on issues that Catholic feminists face. Many of these offerings are heartbreaking yet it is clear none of these women have lost heart in the church they love. Actually some of these women have converted to Catholicism as adults. The book deals with the tough issues of our day such as defining family, concerns about accepting LGBT Catholics as well as the acceptance of women in ministry. Human sexuality is very thoughtfully considered in several of these essays. It may seem odd to say but I found this book to be a real page turner. Really, I was enthralled by the level of commitment that each of these women are to making the Catholic Church a place for equality and justice. You will want to share this book with all the women and men in your life.

A powerful and prophetic book!
By HistoryProf
This powerful and important book presents the insights, experiences, and wisdom of Catholic women from around the world. They are all women who claim, profess, and practice their Catholic faith, but who often feel frustrated by the lack of agency they are afforded in the church they love.Although this book was prepared specifically to be available at the time of the 2015 Vatican Synod on the Family (at which women are not allowed to be delegates or to vote), the concerns the authors express are timeless. While there are some really deep ideas in this volume, it is very accessible to the general reader. While some of the authors are well known writers and scholars, others are "voices from the pews." ALL are worth listening to, and all have wisdom to share. To read these essays is to make new friends. I am grateful to them for opening themselves to us.
