A Classic book in Chemical Engineering.

This textbook was the first to use the concept of transport phenomena (momentum, heat, and mass transfer) in the senior-year course of "Principles of Chemical Engineering". It was published in late 1959, beating "BSL" (Bird, Stewart and Lightfoot, "Transport Phenomena") which came out in 1960. Most universities at the time were using G.G. Brown et. al.'s "Unit Operations" which was written by professors at the University of Michigan. Alan Foust, the senior author of the present book was one of the authors of the G.G. Brown book. The first textbook in this area of Chemical Engineering was Walker, Lewis and McAdams' "Principles of Chemical Engineering" at MIT in 1923, followed by Badger and McCabe's "Elements of Chemical Engineering in 1931. Of all the above mentioned textbooks, Foust's book is the most underrated. It is a classic in my opinion.
There was a second edition of Foust's book in 1980. Other textbooks that covered both transport phenomena and unit operations are: Geankoplis, "Transport Processes and Unit Operations" 1983, 1993; and Griskey, "Transport Phenomena and Unit Operations" 1980, 2002.

Very good book for chemical engineers to learn key concepts about unit operations

A Definitive Text on Basic Chemical Engineering

I was there at the creation! I was a student of Foust et al at the time this book was conceived and written. My class (class of '58) in Chemical Engineering at Lehigh University was the first to use this text on mimeographed sheets, issued just one step ahead of the teaching process. My class and the next following ('59) essentially proofed this text written by five dedicated professors of the department----they were the department save for a few graduate students that helped in the lab. These professors were not arm chair teachers but also did outside consulting for industry during the school year and in the summer worked full time in industry and the quality and usefulness of the text reflects this experience.
This was one of the first text to classify the unit operations by the underlying process----heat transfer, mass transfer, momentum transfer, etc.
Professor Foust was also one of the authors of an earlier text by the same title by Brown and led the group in the publication of the several editions.
I refer to this text regularly and it is one of my dogeared technical library references kept right next to Perry's.
