Good college textbook with insights into sociology and its definitions, living examples

A good textbook on sociology provides various perspectives on the same issue, rather than making judgments for the reader. This book does that. It is filled with interesting photos, examples, illustrations and charts. I particularly was attracted to the section on politics and religion, giving accurate and insightful definitions of terms such as nationalism, as well as various structures of government.

In the religion section, it quotes and explains Marx's well-known quote of religion as the opium of the people, as well as Weber's counter-quote that religion is a force for social change, rather than a system to pacify the people.

Additionally, it provides insight into terminology used to classify or label various religious entities, including church, sect, denominations and cults. A church is an established religious organization with strong ties to the larger secular society. A sect rejects the religious beliefs or practices of established churches and usually is formed when a small group splits off to form a rival organization. Should be required reading for high schoolers

I have read a lot of self-help and relationship books, but this one really stands out.

I can't imagine anyone reading and applying the information in this book and NOT having a peaceful, loving, satisfying married life.

It is simple, but not easy, but Gary Chapman practices what he preaches (and sometimes fails, as he relates in his personal anecdotes).

Anyone can have a happy marriage, but both spouses need to agree on the rules, and this is a great guidebook.

Great advice for marriage

Every relationship needs a Christian tune-up and this book was it. It teaches what marriage is in the eyes of God, and helped my husband and I get over the hump. For a couple that needs to have a faith fill recharge twice a year, this was an enormous help. I plan on continueing to add to our library. Sometimes a couple just need to be able to look unselfishly at their lives and marriage using sound biblical teachings and advice.

If you have ever attended Gary's 4 part lecture series and wanted it in book form, here it is. This is his primary work that goes well beyond the 5 Love Languages (although he does briefly touch on those here). This is primary written for people who are already married. His book, "The Things I wish I Knew Before I Married" is probably better for those who are engaged.

Al Bahr Towers are the most distinctive and innovative new landmark in the Middle East. Built for the Abu Dhabi Investment Council, the two 25-storey towers provide Abu Dhabi with a unique gateway to the city. Though built out of glass and steel, they represent a complete departure from other contemporary high-rise buildings. Modern and pioneering in their use of the most up-to-date technologies, they have been conceived to be entirely rooted in the local culture and environment. The towers are designed using geometric principles derived from traditional Islamic architecture. Their distinguishing feature is a contemporary interpretation of the traditional mashrabiya, a wooden lattice screen that is commonly used by vernacular Islamic architecture to provide shade and privacy. With over 2000 components, the towers’ monumental mashrabiya have been specially developed by the architects Aedas not only for their cultural associations but also their sustainable benefits. They create a unique dynamic shading system that opens and closes during the course of each day in response to the movement of the sun, substantially reducing solar gain.�

About the Author

Peter Oborn is former Deputy Chairman of Aedas Architects Ltd, part of the Aedas Group, which is ranked as one of the world’s largest international architectural practices. Peter has considerable experience of working internationally, particularly in the Gulf, and has completed projects in Oman, Qatar and the UAE. He was responsible for inception of the practice’s Research & Development group, based in London, which has developed specialisms in sustainability, advanced modelling and computational design. Underpinning the work of the group is a commitment to an increasingly rigorous and thoughtful design process, combining empirical analysis with creativity. Peter is a national member of the RIBA Council and was elected the RIBA's Vice President for International Relations in October 2011.
