About the Author
Pat Tomlinson's working life has been spent developing, delivering or teaching aspects of children's policy. Her decades of experience and learning include school teaching in the 1970s, to play development work in the 1980s, as a university academic developing and delivering childhood studies graduate programmes through the 1990s to 2009 when she took up the position of head of the early years programme at the Children's Workforce Development Council. Her interest in early childhood policy continues through involvement as governor of a large college and membership of a number of early years fora.

Best so far!

Three is the best so far in the Chandler series. It starts off right where Spree ended. While Spree was an all out action packed running for your life from one scene to the next this was more methodical and had more story.

I really don't want to give anything away that happened in this or the two previous books. This had a little bit of everything. Action, gore, sex, evilness, heroes. It had so much. Chandler finds herself in another situation where she has to make tough decisions. For her though, decisions are life or death. She has to save Canada and Mexico from a crazy POTUS.

The twists and turns were unpredictable and completely had me going "Oh, well that makes sense." Or "No way!"

I love, love, love this series! Chandler is such a favorite. She's superhuman. I hope to read more and more. Not to mention I love that we bring in characters from other series. Jack and Harry their banter is too much.

Ok, now I have to admit at the end I was tearing up and couldn't even see the words in front of me. Amazing, how one minute we can go from action packed crazy to practically bawling. So many emotions.

Horrific and imaginative with nonstop action

Third in the Codename: Chandler horror action suspense series revolving around the remaining three septuplets and their rush to save the world.

I received this as a story ARC from the publisher.

My Take
Jesus, Konrath and Peterson have the most horrific imaginations! Their characters are nightmares! If you like reading about psychopaths and total brutality, this one's for you. And yeah, it is a great non-stop, roller coaster, action ride of a story--you'll just need a strong stomach and leave the compassion at home!

Konrath/Peterson switch POVs among the girls; it's easy enough to follow along as they let you know at the start of a chapter who's talking.

I gotta hand it to the girls. They are inventive survivors--to the max! And Konrath/Peterson have a great hook to start this story. I couldn't read fast enough to find out the why of Hammett's initial, um, state of undress as well as Chandler's attitude toward her sister! There was so much drama and tension--yeah, the attitudes of most of the spies are pretty over-the-top--but you can't possibly be bored. I know my heart was in my mouth for most of the story!

The authors do manage to throw in humor, just to cut the tension a bit:

"I'm going to kill you with this cheese?

It is sharp cheddar."

The talk about Fleming's pimped-out wheelchair--wait'll you read what she does to the chair at the motorcycle shop! Although my imagination absolutely fails me on the "He can do a handstand while doing a split."

Part of what I saw as the horror in this is the constant wondering by the sisters as to when they should kill each other. Not that they're prejudiced or anything. They'll kill anyone they need to. But I gotta tell ya, these three girls are a step up from the rest. The others'll kill, and do it horrifically, just for the fun of it.

Speaking of characters, a few of the characters in this story come from other stories in the authors' repertoires (see "The Characters").

Shockingly, in spite of being a trilogy (I'm being snide--I was slammed in the comments on Amazon for daring to review a book in a series and not have read every book, short story, and novella previous to it--so I would know what was going on and be able to do a proper review...*eye roll*...), you don't need to have read the previous story in Konrath/Peterson's series; I suspect your "appreciation of this one would be richer for it, but it's not essential. I certainly didn't feel lost. I do get the impression that the start of this one picks up immediately after Spree (Codename: Chandler, #2).

A few hiccups for me: why wouldn't someone as smart as Fleming think of a GPS in the van, especially when the salesman tells her it has antitheft? There wasn't much finesse in the Bradley-Fleming hook-up, although it did work well.

Oh, wow, we learn about Fleming's accident, and what caused it. I'm curious to read the others in this series, and I'd like to find out who the man is who adopted Chandler. He sounds like he was The Instructor at one point, but then I get the impression they aren't the same man. I'm confused.

Ooh, a bit preachy...although I do agree with the sentiment (the quote may not be exact as this is an uncorrected proof, but I really liked this):
That's the whole point of Homeland Security, isn't it? Personal safety at the expense of personal freedoms. Who cares if our government kills our enemies without a trial or even evidence, as long as we're protected? Who cares if we kill our own citizens? We trust those in power to do what's right for the country..."

Uh-huh, right. Just substitute "themselves" for "country" and it's about right...

It took a bit before I got comfy with Harry mouthing off. Lordy, he's so gross and sex-obsessed...you can't help but laugh.

If you're planning to travel to Mexico at all, you might want to read it just to put you on your guard! Between the cartonero selling Chandler, and the taxi driver who tried to rob her...oh, boy...

Be warned...you will cry at the end.

The Story
Chandler was forced to assassinate the President of the United States, and her blackmailer has it on tape. But he's taken it too far, and all three sisters are determined to take him down! Um, right after they save the world.

The Characters
Chandler, Hammett, and Fleming are what's left of seven identical sisters--Chandler has killed the others. They are well-trained U.S. spies who are manipulated, used, and abused (and that is such an understatement!) in the service of The Instructor, who heads up both Hydra and Hydra Deux, top-secret, �ber-vicious assassin programs. He's someone I'd love to stake out on an anthill in the hot sun--and occasionally sprinkle with water to keep him alive and hurtin' for as long as possible. Chandler is hiding Julie (see Exposed (Codename: Chandler, #0.2)) on a remote island off the coast of Maine. Kirk is her dog.

Chandler and Hammett, once known as Betsy, are still field operatives; Chandler is discovering she has a heart while Hammett is a psychopath with no morals who prefers dogs. Fleming was damaged in an "accident" and now works from a wheelchair behind a desk as Chandler's handler and exercising her particular genius. Bradley Milton is a robotics expert who lives and works in Baltimore.

Jack Daniels does the girls a favor. A really BIG favor. Harry McGlade has a much bigger part to play--and if you stick around, Harry'd be glad to show you just how big. What a crack up he is! Tequila Abernathy is semiretired from his Enforcer job and does favors for friends. David Lund is a regular guy, a firefighter, whom Chandler loves, but he's horrified by her casual approach to killing. Elise was her social worker.

President J. Phillip Ratzenberger is appropriately named; he is a rat, one with some nasty plans. Chaz is the cat Ratzenberger fantasizes about killing.

Hydra Deux spies
Heathcliff (he and Chandler first hook up in Hit (Codename: Chandler, #0.1)) is partnered with the intimidating Earnshaw--think of a shaved gorilla in drag. There's a bit where Heath says kissing Earnshaw destroyed his pretending it was Chandler...who doesn't have razor stubble on her face. You want to like Heath, especially when you learn that he likes killing when "justice was dealt and innocents spared", but then he continues with "...when innocents refused to cooperate..." ick Scarlett hates men and is partnered up with Rhett who keeps trying on his cowboy charm. Isolde is, oh my god, the most nightmarish of this bunch with a love to hurt and be hurt; she's partnered up with Tristan, who loves to accommodate her.

Manuel Diaz is the arenero in Mexico City. Dr. Derek Fossen is forced to help if he wants to save his sister. Maria Elena Castellano was Heathcliff's mother; Filena is his half-sister. Murray Kaufmann, Chandler's parole officer, forgave her as he died. Lyle Gerard works on greens maintenance at the Oakdale Gold and Country Club, and he gets the shock of his life when Isolde rises up, holding her guts.

Los Zetas are an enforcement arm for the Gulf cartel; El C�rtel de Sinaloa are rivals.

The Cover

this book certainly kept my interest. I had trouble putting it down. It was the third book in the series. I enjoyed all three. the concept of three identical sisters as spies in novel and creates interesting situations.

About the Author
Frank J. Landy of Baruch College of the City University of New York and Landy Litigation Support Group has been a teacher, published scholar, textbook author, and consultant in Organizational Psychology to government and business both domestically and internationally for 35 years. He has received numerous awards from scientific societies for that body of work. He is also frequently called upon to present expert testimony in employment discrimination cases.

Jeffrey M. Conte is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at San Diego State University. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Penn State University. His research interests include personnel selection, personality predictors of job performance, and factors associated with health and stress in the workplace.� He has worked with a variety of organizations in addressing such issues as human resource selection, stress, training evaluation, and organizational factors related to safety.

Great Intro to I/O Psychology

I reviewed this textbook for an undergraduate class I am teaching. I/O psychology is a broad and complex topic area, making it difficult to find a textbook that is good in each subtopic area. Landy and Conte do a great job in all areas by being fairly broad and up to date. They also do a good job of presenting the material from the perspective of the current trends in applied I/O psychology.

I would recommend this text for undergraduate courses and graduate courses too (with supplemental articles added by the instructor). The instructor support materials are a good starting point for creating lectures, exercises, and assignments. The text is student friendly with an excellent layout, good sidebars, and "module" summaries after subtopics within a chapter (making it easy to skip a subtopic).

Excellent textbook

Landy and Conte have written a refreshing book on I/O Psychology. It is clear and to the point, making it a very easy and engaging reading. It includes all the usual subjects of Industrial Psych: job analysis, performance measurement, staffing, training and development, etc. The Organizational Psych part is very good, too, covering subjects like stress, violence at work, leadership and teams, among others. This book and Muchinsky's are two of the best textbooks on I/O Psych at the present.

This provides an excellent introduction and discussion of the terms and issues industrial and organizational psychologists need to know today. This book also provides a nice foundation for the scientific research requirements behavioral psychologists should use and ought to have a firm grasp of. Readers will gain a basic understanding of the history and future of industrial and organizational psychology, as well as the practical issues of managing the workplace of today. There is an extensive glossary with meaningful terms to comprehend, and the references cited provide a well-fleshed-out foundation of pertinent issues and of Work in the 21st Century: An Introduction to Industrial and Organizational Psychology, including essential ideas presented by the respected researchers and thinkers in this field of study.

Organised and No Frills

Unlike some books on English language teaching, "Approaches and Methods" by Richards and Rodgers is a logically organised, relatively jargon-free and easily grasped book. It is almost certain you will not be diving for the headache tablets after this book.

Covering a large range of the historical and current second language teaching methodologies, the book discusses methods in a logical format that is the same throughout. They discuss three broad areas: Approach, (the theories and ideas underpinning the method), Design, (roles, materials and so on), and Procedure, (what happens in the classroom). This makes each chapter exceptionally well-organised.

The book covers a lot of different methods, including those that are less in favour these days, as well as some that are more recent. However, some very recent developments are not included, such as the controversial Dogme of Thornbury and Medding. What *is* in the book includes Suggestopaedia, TPR, NLP, Natural Way, Multiple Intelligences and more. All of them come with a brief discussion on the background that they came from.

This is an incredibly valuable book for a run down on the methodologies that have come and gone, (some still on the way out). It is an excellent resource that serves well as a reference, or something to be read from cover-to-cover. Or both.

A Good Overview of Teaching Methods

This book provides a great overview of all of the major, and some of the minor, approaches to language teaching. This book is laid out into three major sections. In the first section the authors deal with major trends in twentieth century language teaching. This gives an excellent historical look at where language teaching has come from and the thought process that accompanied such trends. The second sections deals with alternative approaches and methods. These include TPR, suggesopedia, whole language, etc. These methods are not commonly used on their own anymore, but used in small ways in overall teaching. The last section is current communicative approach. This is a great chapter on the origin of communicative teaching and how it has changed over the last 20 years.

What is really useful in this book is its layout. Each method is titled in the table of contents for easy access. Then once you are at the appropriate chapter it is subtitled with such useful headings as: approach, method, design, teacher's role, student's role, and types of activities. This really made each method easy to understand and see how it would work in the classroom.

About the Author

Anand Halve is the co-founder and Director of chlorophyll brand & communications consultancy, Mumbai, India. Prior to this, he was on the Board of Enterprise Nexus Communications, and has worked at Lowe Lintas and Rediffusion. He did his MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, India, in 1977. He has also been a visiting faculty at Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad and IIM, Ahmedabad, for several years.

At chlorophyll, he has been instrumental in the development of copyrighted branding models and brand development processes. His experience as an entrepreneur has been featured as one of the case studies in Rashmi Bansal’s bestseller, Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish, which published by IIM, Ahmedabad in 2008. Halve also contributes to various online and print media, including Hindustan Times, Campaign India magazine, afaqs.com and exchange4media.com.

A lovely compilation of Indian brands

(I bought this book in India, from Flipkart. While it's a great book, the $37 Amazon price is ridiculous.)

With plenty of international brand case studies, what was really missing was a study on Indian brands. This is a good showcase by one of the leading writers in the space.

Thoroughly enjoyable with plenty of little 'stories' (especially the one on how Taste The Thunder came about or how Verghese Kurien stuck behind Da Cunha Communications), it tracks stories of iconic Indian brands like Thums Up, Hero, AirTel, Maruti and many more.

Probably a must-read if you're in the marketing-advertising space in India, a very decent read even otherwise.

Only downsides? The last few brands (Femina, Airtel) seemed a little rush to me, there weren't as many 'stories' or themes of adaptability as in the case of the previous brands, and they somehow seemed to me to be a bit of a 'filler'.

I'd have also loved to see some 'less obvious' brands, perhaps a Bisleri, and perhaps a small section on Indian brands that have failed (Onida Candy, the killing of Kelvinator, etc). That would have probably made the book complete and provided a complete learning. But perhaps, that's something that Halve has in store for us in Part 2.

I am one of the professors Dr. Seifert is talking about in his review. I continue to use this textbook in both graduate and undergraduate classes on job design. Every semester I search for a better alternative, but am unable to find it. I find this book to be helpful and a good reference that incorporates ergonomics, work design, and methods engineering. (I also use old versions of the lab book that contain very well-made forms.) This text contains the best discussion of time standards I have seen. The 11th edition contains a new chapter on cognitive work. This is a topic I have always discussed and am glad to see formal treatment of it in the new edition. As with any textbook, I do not use it as the sole source of information taught in the classroom and would not recommend it as a sole source. I use the topics in the text to launch discussions and research papers on systems theory, lean, cycle time, environmental, process improvement methodologies, ethics, and other issues for manufacturing and non-shopfloor applications. I find the book especially useful in the area of work design and time standards.
Students have found these skills useful in the workplace. Many of our students work in process improvement and lean implementations. They use these skills to reduce cycle time and balance the lines to meet the demands of customers. Good implementation of lean requires knowledge of how to balance a line to meet customer demand, identify constraints, reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, understanding and dealing with change, cost/benefit analysis, and a direct understanding the relationship between the customer demand and production rate. This text touches on or covers in detail these topics.
I find that the book appears to focus on machine and operator efficiency and utilization, has a primarily decompositional view of work, and concentrates mostly on shopfloor operations. Even with these drawbacks, the text gives the reader solid information on improving workplace design and reducing cycle time while improving worker safety and productivity. I use the discussion on machine and worker utilization to compare and contrast with other manufacturing philosophies, and to relate what the text is covering to more 'big picture' aspects. Other topics not included are a good discussion of maintenance operations and quality. I suggest using other sources to incorporate those topics. All in all, the book is not perfect. It is a very good reference book and text book.
