Good stuff

So here's the breakdown: Arietta is a blues singer at a night club, while Trip is a real estate tycoon. Upon hearing Arietta sing, Trip is enchanted. Despite her general wariness, Arietta agrees to go out Trip who is a nice departure from the flowery, damn-near feminine heroes being massed produce-I love them, but it's nice to read about a guy who says the wrong thing and is completely oblivious to it. Trip outright propositions her to become his "kept woman." That didn't go well. Events force them to put aside their disagreement, and they become romantically involved. Trip lavishes Arietta with outrageous gifts before becoming a victim of the housing crisis and losing all his wealth. He disconnects himself from Arietta believing since he cannot fulfill his end of their deal. Arietta quietly steps up as rescuer. Nice balance of romance and erotica. Though I liked Pussycat Death Squad better, I've started to use this author as a fall back for when I've become disgusted with insipid porn disuised as romance.

First, this author has my heart and I am here for whatever musical genre she chooses (rock n roll or blues) my personal rating is platinum. Intensity and emotion fly from the pages and that age old question "what's love got to do with it" is dissected, put under a microscope, analyzed, and found worthy of release. I was not disappointed with the end. It was a rush, not rushed! From the beginning of the last scene to the last period, I was enthralled and antsy. it was the climatic conclusion to a book that was building and sizzling up to this point. There was nowhere else to go. She laid her heart bare in a single tear and he pledged to her everything. Family members were just enough...just as in real life, they have a small place, but these lives are not theirs to live and the story not theirs to tell. I will say the fact that the hero's family blew me away with their silent support, respect and acknowledgment that he had given up much for them was a nice touch. Ms. Holcomb you are a true rock star!

Excellent Portrayl by Stebbins

In-depth chronicle into the life and times of not only the mega-talented and tormented Dennis, but also the band and the Wilson family as a whole, and how each individual member related to each other and their music.
As a teenage surf rat who grew up in Southern Cali. the 60's, I admired their music from the first time I heard "Surfin".
Stebbins pulls no punches in his excellent weaving of the story from the band's beginnings to DW's tragic final day in Marina Del Ray.
A wealth of information on the band's extensive catalouge of music, and all of the players included therein, and some great pics. as well.
Definitely a must read for any BB/DW fan.

What might have been..

This thing actually moved me to tears in the last couple of chapters. What a sad, sad ending to an amazing life. What a wave, what a ride.

One of my favorite elements of this book is how Stebbins ponders a lot of 'what ifs' based on Dennis' musical collaborations that were never (or very sparsely) recorded, with people like Christine McVie, Brian Wilson, members of Chicago, and many others. Absolutely fascinating. Dennis had so many plans but ultimately lost his ambition and the ability to sing. There were lots of contributing factors (a lot more than I was aware of), and the weight of this tragedy - personally and historically - is simply heartbreaking. Dennis was, after all, an extremely generous and humble person (not to mention a brilliant composer and musician). He lived a very unique life.

I've read almost all the BB books out there but I still learned so much about the band itself from this book. Dennis' influence was very, very significant within the band. His solo material speaks for itself. His songs are so different from one another but all so good. Man...

A completely worthwhile purchase.. I lucked out and got one for $35.00 a few weeks ago, just keep checking.

Some books have a life of their own

Jon Stebbins has in a sense given the oppurtunnity to meet Dennis Wilson in writing this book.Some books just grab some people and this one surely had it's effect on my life.I always had in an interest in "The Beach Boys" music ever since I was a kid so naturally as I Grew older I became familiar with all of their albums and thru discovering albums like "Sunflower" and of course "Holland" I became aquainted with the songwriting capabilities of Dennis Wilson.It was not until I read this book that I began to feel like Dennis was waiting for me to find his solo album "Pacific Ocean Blue",like he was calling out to me thru the words of his life story that this author has done such a good job writing.The first time I listened to P.O.B. I liked it,but was not blown away or anything.After a few listens though the songwriting technique,vocal style,instrumentation,lyrics,and overall feeling of this man's music started to grow on me.A lot.By the time I finished this book I had an even greater appreciation for the music when you think about his life and all he must have been going thru.It,s amazing that he could have made music that good in the midst of a downward spiral to his own death.I often open this book to a random page and just read parts of the book even though I've already read it all the way thru.It is like a Dennis Wilson song;You only learn to love it more with time,and parts that may have seemed incidental before begin shining in all their beauty.Whether or not Stebbins get's every detail right or every part of the story told is irrelevant to me.Enough of the true story of Dennis is told to then listen to the music and put the pieces together.Because of that very reason it is one of my favorite books.Highly recomended,just be careful you might get pulled in.

Downforce and Aerodynamic Analysis Done Well

I have now read 3 books on aerodynamics and their application to motorsports. Simon McBeath has done an expectional job of presenting the information in a logical sequence at a level that both the beginner and experienced can benefit from. His style of writing keeps the topics interesting providing not only the technical data needed, but applying it to real world situatuins with valuable photos of high quality.
I found myself more inclined to read this book cover to cover than some novels I have read. A truly excellent book that was better than I had expected it to be. Very well done.

Efron's bootstrap text

Brad Efron wrote the key paper rediscovering the bootstrap and putting it in its proper place with other resampling techniques in his famous 1979 paper in the Annals of Statistics. His work was a breakthrough that has now led to hundreds of other publications and several books on the bootstrap and more general resampling procedures by himself, his students and many other statisticians. In fact I am working on a book with goals similar to what he and Rob Tibshirani achieve in this monograph. It is a concise and accurate presentation of the bootstrap and its wide variety of applications and is very much up to the state-of-the-art in this rapidly growing area of statistics. It is written in an intuitive fashion and avoids much of the mathematics (Edgeworth expansions etc.) which are needed to provide formal proof that the bootstrap does what it is intended to do. Provides most of the important references up through 1993. For a similar treatment that is more current, see Davison and Hinkley (1997). Bootstrap Methods and their Application. Those interested in the theory and formal mathematics should consult Hall (1992). The Bootstrap and Edgeworth Expansion.

wonderful, interesting book

that's a very simple and clear book about bootstrapping They consider bootstrapping as a way to estimate confidence intervals and other properties of a statistical distribution. Its mainadvantages are a) it requires no knolwedge of the actual distribution(e.g., it does not have to be normal) b) in principle, it can be used with any statistics method and any solution.

A great book to learn the Bootstrap method from

This is the best book to learn about the bootstrap. Clear style, no empty verbiage, good problems, excellent examples are some of the qualities that make this exposition of Bootstrap great. The math level is minimal - some basic statistics (perhaps at the level of Wackerly et al's book) - is all that's required.

Inspiring book on ballpoint art

I'm in awe at what some of them have created. It's like these artists have turned the ballpoint pen into some sort of fine art tool. The chapters cover classical drawing, modern abstraction, graphic illustration, contemporary realism and sketchbook styles.

There are some artworks that made me do a double take. Like is that created by coloured pencil or ballpoint pen? The techniques of the artists are fantastic. Portrait drawings or landscape sketches are drawn as if with pencils until you read the caption to see that everything's with ballpoint ink. I'm surprised that there are so many colours available for the pens.

Matt Rota's the author of this book and he's also a skilful artist himself. He has included the history of ballpoint pens, profiles and analysis of contributing artists and their work, and also wrote several tutorials in this book. The book's not just inspiring, it also teaches.

This is a fantastic book. It will show you the possibilities of the humble ballpoint pen.

Amazing artists and techniques !!!!!!

The Art of Ballpoint was a great reference book for some of the best artists working in this medium (some of the portraits in this book are mind-blowing). And for anyone who wants to try and do a little bit more with the pens lying around their house themselves, Matt Rota has designed a very clear instructional method with examples and exercises to walk you through the basics.
I typically work with digital drawing programs, but this reminded me of how beautiful ink on paper can be, and inspired me to do more sketching. I was really surprised by the possibilities, and the artists in this book are selected in a particular way to demonstrate the pen’s full range.
This is also a good introduction to Rota, an amazing artist himself, who keeps the book alive with a website, Facebook and Instagram, where he shares more artists and reference material. Definitely recommend this!

A Unique Book!

This book is a rare resource focused exclusively on artworks made using ball point pen.
I've never seen anything covering this subject matter before. Ballpoint may seem like a niche medium
but it has an interesting history and many contemporary practitioners are highlighted here.
The author, Matt Rota, is a killer illustrator in his own right and The Art of Ballpoint includes
a half dozen pages of the incredible Mu Pan's artwork along with 20 other talented artists.
The accompanying text gives great insight into their practices as well.

Great on ideas, flawed repertoire

I have now had the opportunity to work with this book longer. Although it is strong on presenting IDEAS, the repertoire choices are at times unclear and unconvincing. To understand these weaknesses more I recommend reading the review on [...]. Even looking at my initial review you will see some quirky repertoire choices which can hardly be considered "safe". Because of the strength of the IDEAS I will leave this book at 4 stars, but it is not a MUST BUY.

If you read my review of Avrukh's twin volumes you will see that I also think he has some repertoire issues.

Surprisingly, against this strong company Yelena Dembo's slim volume (although a bit dated now), holds up relatively well for a lower Elo target market - although she has also made repertoire compromises.

Initial Review 2011

NOTE: Please see my comments on how I rated this book at end.

The Grunfeld has a proud literary tradition. Perhaps it is because of the clear strategic ideas, perhaps because of the forcing nature of the lines, or perhaps because of the continuous innovation since Grunfeld unleashed his idea against Alekhine in 1922. In 2011 we have two additions to the tradition, this volume by Delchev/Agrest, and Grandmaster Repertoire 8: The Gr�nfeld Defence Vol.1by Avruk. I'll compare the latter in a later review.

Delchev/Agrest's book is aimed at normal players - say 1800-2200 Elo. Below that level I would not recommend the Grunfeld as an opening as the strategic ideas are complex (as a junior it took me 6 games before I won one); above that level players will find this book very useful but will need more.

Delchev/Agrest have structured their book around 16 parts - each part has a main ideas section, a main lines section in tree format, and a games section. Done poorly this approach can lead to duplication. Here it is done very well. The main ideas section first covers the positional aims. Openings must be understood before the lines are memorised, and these sections are essential. Second, the authors cover the main tactical motifs. This is an aspect not well covered in the tactical texts. Delgrev/Agrest show the sort of positions where black can aim to exploit tactical means, or the sorts of positions to be wary of because white can exploit tactical means - important.

A summary of the recommendations for the main lines:

Classical Exchange: Shamkovich's 10...Qc7. I was curious to see this 1960's favourite of Fischer resurrected. It has not been recommended since Adorjan/Dory Winning With the Grunfeld (Macmillan Chess Library)in 1987, and I thought it had been pushed into the background by Bf4 in the late 1980's. However the authors show how this can be met using their main positional ideas, and disagree on a key position with Sakaev { How to Get the Edge Against the Gruenfeld } who is the main authority on this line. As a back-up they offer Anand's 10...Na5 (well, Anand played it in his match with Topalov), also recommended by Dembo in Play the Grunfeld: Detailed coverage of this Kasparov favourite and provide a needed update.

Modern Exchange
- Eingorn's 8 Rb1: the declined variation with Chiburdanidze's 13...Bc7!? - I was really pleased to see this counter intuitive line recommended - most texts suggest the endgame variations. As a back-up they have 9...b6, which was also Dembo's recommendation.
- Karpov's 7/8 Be3: again Delgrev/Agrest recommend avoiding the endgame.

Russian System: the semi-Smyslov with 7...Nc6. This has been the standard repertoire recommendation since Rowsen in 1999 { Understanding the Grunfeld}, followed by Dembo.

Systems with Bg5: standard 4/5...Ne4, but avoiding the sharp lines after 7...e6 with 7...0-0!?. As an aside, over the years I have found 4...Ne4 5 Nxe4 a surprisingly annoying line - I had a very good minature win over Bruce Watson, but recently lost to Luke Li. This gets very little coverage, but neither has anyone else.

Systems with Bf4: standard mainlines. Note that Dembo (surprisingly) recommended 5 e3 00, allowing the gambit 6 cxd5 Nxd5 7 Nxd5 Qxd5 8 bxc7. Delchev/Agrest claim this leads to an almost certain draw, and thus return to the sharp 5..c5 as providing better winning prospects.

Fianchetto: the main debate in repertoire books has been when to play ...e5. Dembo delayed castling and started active play immediately. Delchev/Agrest hold back and play 8...00 and 9...Re8. This was also the prefered approach of Janjgava in 2003 in his book dedicated to these lines King's Indian & Grunfeld: Fianchetto Lines.

Each part follows with a games section. Delchev/Agrest use this well, either to show the continuations of their recommended lines, or to demonstrate their back up lines.

I am a player in the target range of this book. I have been playing the Grunfeld since 1972, and this text gives me almost everything I need. I will use it as my main reference for the immediate future. If you are of my level, I thoroughly recommend Delgrev/Agrest.

The only remaining question is 4 stars or 5? I want to reserve 5 stars for the books that I have been most influential on me:Hartson's 1972 Grunfeld Defence (Chess); Adorjan/Dory's 1987 Winning With the Grunfeld (Macmillan Chess Library), Rowsen's 1999 Understanding the Grunfeld, and Sakaev's 2004 How to Get the Edge Against the Gruenfeld. However Delgrev/Agrest is a "complete" opening tutor, and if I am still using Delchev/Agrest as my main reference in 4-5 years time I will upgrade the rating.
