Wonderful Book!

THis book was my assignment for US History. At first, I thought it was going to be boring. But I just couldn't put it down after I started.After reading it , I had a better understanding to the difficulties of rebuilding the peaceful society between the blacks and white, especially under the presence if KKK.It is a truly touching and sad book.

Freedom Road

I really enjoyed reading this book. I have found books about the Civil War. This is one of the few books I read that deal with its after-math. It gives a well written illustration of the Reconstruction. The reader becomes the free slave, carpetbagger, poor white and bankrupt plantation owner. As each character meets Gideon Jackson each person discovers their importance in the development of humanity.

Reconstruction's Freedom Road

Even though this fictional book was assigned for a class in Civil War history, it turned out to be an enjoyable assignment. It is a very readable account of Reconstruction from 1865 to 1877. The book describes how well Reconstruction was working for recently emancipated slaves in South Carolina, and how bad it was going for the elite southern whites there. It does an amazing job of portraying the positive struggles of African Americans, and some working class whites, and how they were succeeding, until the final withdrawal of Union troops from the South.

This book is fun to read in the beginning, but the sad consequences of Reconstruction bring it to the inevitable conclusion. This does not detract from the book's accurate portrayal of what really caused Reconstruction to fail.

This is an excellent book that you will have no trouble reading in one sitting. If you read this book, you will understand what really happened during Reconstruction, and the real facts that they failed to tell most of us in high school. This book was published in 1944, long before most US historians recognized how southern historians had distorted the country's view of Reconstruction. Thanks to recent historians, we now have a much more accurate picture of this era.

OK, maybe, for some begineers...

This may be an OK book for some beginners - those who have never used Acrobat before - but it skips over some very important basics, or just skims through them, and the Acrobat X book was actually better than this one. Acrobat Pro XI just didn't bring a lot new to the table and this sparse book shows that.

For experienced users, I would just use the Adobe Acrobat XI online help... particularly if you're just upgrading from Acrobat X.

Two stars - and then only for beginners.

[edit] After quickly finishing up this CIB, I looked back of the Acrobat X version and found some things missing from the XI book that I consider necessities. Maybe if you're a beginner and buy them both, you'll understand Acrobat a little better. But be warned, neither offers anything in the way of scripting, very little on forms, etc. The Acrobat XI books just takes you deeper into document sharing and annotation (since Adobe is trying to sell you the Acrobat.com service, anyway).

This book is great for EVERYBODY who wants to know the incredible functions of this easy going software! The fact is this Acrobat XI is amazingly simply to understand and use (if only all the Adobe software were the same, so intuitive and so easy access) and consequently, the book is very accessible even for the beginners! You will never see a PDF in the same way after having read this book. Simply amazing!!!!

What a kiss!

Imogen is a young girl who's lost in the middle of her family. She's the odd one out, physically and mentally. She's used as unpaid help for her brothers and sisters. Her mother Elsa Peach, is an artist who values creativity above all things. And she hates cooking. Elsa hasn't cooked since the day her husband walked out on her, so Imogen has hidden her affinity for cooking and food from her. Imogen is given the chance to go to France and cook, and she takes it.

Shy Imogen is trying hard to prove herself and finds herself suddenly being pursued by two handsome men she works with. She's unsure what to do, when she experiences an amazing kiss playing Blind Man's Bluff at a party. The kiss awakens something in Imogen she's never felt before. And so she's off trying to figure out who her new secret admirer is.

I liked seeing Imogen grow as a person. She went from being this really introverted, shy, unassuming person to someone who had self confidence. I also liked Imogen's varied friends and how they also had their own parts to play in the story. They added some humor. The best part was that it wasn't easy trying to figure out who had kissed Imogen. There were a lot of candidates, and I had my favorites. Lucie Hart did a great job of describing the French seaside. It sounds like a slice of Heaven!

This is Lucie Hart's debut book, and I am looking forward to reading more by her!

About the Author
Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was born illegitimately in Greenwich, London, in 1875 to actors Mary Jane Richards and T.H. Edgar. As an infant he was adopted by George Freeman, a porter at Billingsgate fish market. Aged eleven, Wallace sold newspapers at Ludgate Circus and upon leaving school took a job with a printer. He later enlisted in the Royal West Kent Regiment, before transferring to the Medical Staff Corps, and was sent to South Africa. In 1898, he published a collection of poems called 'The Mission that Failed', and subsequently left the army to become correspondent for Reuters. South African war correspondent for 'The Daily Mail' followed and his articles were later published as 'Unofficial Dispatches'. His outspokenness infuriated Lord Kitchener, who removed his credentials. He then edited the 'Rand Daily Mail', but gambled disastrously on the South African Stock Market. Returning to England, Wallace at first reported on crimes and hanging trials, before becoming editor of 'The Evening News'. It was in 1905 that he founded the Tallis Press, publishing 'Smithy', a collection of soldier stories, and 'The Four Just Men'. The latter was published with the ending removed as an advertising stunt and he offered oe500 to readers who could successfully guess the ending. Unfortunately, many did and he was almost bankrupted. At various times Wallace also worked as a journalist on 'The Standard', 'The Star', 'The Week-End Racing Supplement' and 'The Story Journal'. In 1917, he became a Special Constable at Lincoln's Inn and also a special interrogator for the War Office. The Daily Mail sent Wallace to investigate atrocities in the Belgian Congo, a trip that provided material for his 'Sanders of the River' books. In 1923, he became Chairman of the Press Club and in 1931 stood as a Liberal Parliamentary candidate for Blackpool. Wallace's first marriage in 1901 to Ivy Caldecott, daughter of a missionary, ended in divorce in 1918 and he later married his much younger secretary, Violet King. Along with countless articles, some 23 screenplays and many short stories, Wallace wrote more than 170 books, which have been translated into 28 languages and sales of which have exceeded 50 million copies. Over 160 films have been made from his books - more than any other author. In the 1920's one of Wallace's many publishers claimed that a quarter of all books read in England were written by him. His sales were exceeded only by 'The Bible'. He died in 1932 whilst working on the screenplay for 'King Kong', having moved to Hollywood after being offered a contract by RKO.

The Clue of the Twisted Candle

This thriller by Edgar Wallace is a perfect example of the Edwardian era's suspense novels which were the most popular form of fiction after the pulp romances of that time. It depends upon twists and turns and unexpected surprises and keeps the reader wondering what's next. It also includes an unflappable hero and a thoroughly despicable villain (an Albanian aristocrat with an unlimited thirst for power and honor). Reading it today is a lot of fun and gives one a sense of that bygone era.

A great one read mystery novel

This is a review of the free Kindle version.

The name didn't impress me too much, but to give you an idea of how good this story was, I read it in one sitting and ignore Poirot on the television for it.

The police detective is, for lack of a better phrase, the Black Ops member of Scotland Yard. If you need a place burgled, he's the one to talk to.

The villain is interesting and unusual. When he explains his motivation, it seems quite appropriate for the character.

The story takes place over years, very unusual for this type of story. Also, the trial isn't covered at all.

Easy to recommend for any mystery fan.

A Very Good Read

The Clue of the Twisted Candle is a mystery in which the main character, John Lexman, is a writer of murder mysteries. Lexman, a happily married man, has financial problems brought on by following bad advice and from borrowing money from a man who is a more than shady character.

Lexman is subsequently and ingeniously framed for the murder of the money lender.

This not an uncommon plot but the story that fleshes out that plot is thorough, detailed, feasible, and very well-written.

I find the lack of modern technology in the book refreshing and I look forward to reading more books by Edgar Wallace.
