The relation between the visual and the verbal spheres has been much contested in recent years, from laments about the 'logocentricism' of the academy to the heralding of the 'pictorial turn' of the multimedia age. This lavishly illustrated book recontextualises these debates through the historical lens of Greek and Roman antiquity. Dr Squire shows how modern Western concepts of 'words' and 'pictures' derive from a post-Reformation tradition of theology and aesthetics. Where modern critics assume a bipartite separation between images and texts, classical antiquity toyed with a more playful and engaged relation between the two. By using the ancient world to rethink our own ideologies of the visual and the verbal, this interdisciplinary book brings together classics and art history, as well as a sustained reflection on their historiography: the result is a new and explosive cultural history of Western visual thinking.

Coaching the System: A complete guide to basketball's most explosive style of play, by Gary Smith, Doug Porter

"If you are interested in Coaching the System, you must be either desperate or crazy!" At least that's what people told authors Gary Smith and Doug Porter when they began investigating this revolutionary style of play almost a decade ago. Ignoring the critics, they went on to coach the two highest scoring teams in men's and women's college basketball history: the University of Redlands, California (132.4 ppg), and Olivet Nazarene University in Illinois (104.1 ppg). From its origins as the Sonny Allen Numbered Fast Break, to Paul Westhead’s Loyola Marymount up-tempo game, the System has been around for decades. But when Grinnell College’s David Arseneault added platoon substitution patterns and hockey-style short shifts, placing a priority on creating three-point looks for his “preferred shooters,” the System truly came into its own. Smith and Porter learned the Grinnell version of the System from Arseneault himself, adapting it to fit their situations coaching men’s and women’s programs. In the past decade their teams set 32 NCAA and NAIA records between them, including most 100-point games in a season (Redlands-23; Olivet-24). Olivet also holds national records for defensive turnovers (36.3 per game) assists (23.8 per game), and three pointers made in a season (509, 15.6 per game). Redlands owns college basketball records (all levels) for field goal attempts (110.3 per game), and three-pointers made (23.8 per game). Now you can learn every detail of this devastating full court run-and-press attack that allows you to dictate tempo and force your opponents out of their normal game plan, capturing the imagination of your players and community, and making coaching fun again! You’ll learn exactly how and why the System works, how to adapt it to fit your personnel, suggestions for conditioning players, organizing System practices, and even ways to respond to the inevitable criticisms that come with playing the game this far “outside the box.” Other chapters offer complete descriptions of the Redlands Attack (Coach Smith’s variation of the Grinnell offense), the LMU Attack (which Westhead popularized and used to advance to the NCAA regional finals in 1990), and the Olivet Attack (Coach Porter’s hybrid version of the LMU and Dribble-Drive offenses). Finally, you'll learn System defensive principles, terminology, and how to cover every conceivable press attack and press-breaker alignment. Also included are 57 drills and over 300 diagrams to illustrate System offense and defense, providing you with a complete blueprint for “Coaching the System!”

Since leaving Redlands he served one year as an assistant at Grinnell College and has consulted for several teams in the United States and in Germany. He is a 1964 graduate of the University of Redlands with a master’s degree in education. Gary lives in Davis, California where his wife Carol, daughter Karen, husband Jay and grandson Max also reside, with frequent trips to Iowa to visit his older daughter Christy, her husband Mike and grandson Ian. Doug Porter has coached women’s basketball since 1977, including nine years as a junior high and high school varsity coach. He began his college career with assistant coaching stints at Wheaton College from 1986-89, and at West Texas A&M University from 1991-94. In 1994 he became head coach at Aurora University where his first team advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet Sixteen. Since 1998 he has been head women’s basketball coach at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois. His teams at Olivet hold sixteen NAIA records and in 2007-08 tied the women’s college basketball all-time single season scoring record by averaging 104.1 points, while forcing 35 turnovers per game. He is a 1977 graduate of Wheaton College, and holds a master’s degree in Physical Education with a Sport Psychology emphasis from the University of North Texas. Doug lives in Bourbonnais with his wife Pam, an elementary school teacher, and their cats Jabez and Jimmy, who are currently unemployed.

Great Coaching Resource
By Evan Massey
This book is written with the "Grinnell System" as its basis, but it is more than a "system" book. Any coach who wants to develop a fastbreak offense should read this. Any coach who wants to develop a pressure defense should read this.

I have coached 30+ years and my teams have won 700+ games. You are always looking for clinics, DVD's and books to expand your knowledge base and give you that extra edge. This book is a GREAT, GREAT resource. It is so detailed. I have read through it but it is a book that I am going to keep on my desk top and reread over and over. It covers-
- theories and philosophy of "System basketball"
- drills and tips to improve a teams fastbreak offense
- 3 different approaches to the end of the fastbreak LMU, Grinnell, and Olivet- all outstanding
- details on press adjustments and types of presses
- drills for teaching fastbreak, teaching full and halfcourt pressure
- drills and techniques to build three point shooters.

Gary Smith may well be the best pressure defensive mind in the country. His ideas about full court pressure are simply outstanding.

Everyone says they want to coach an uptempo offense and a pressure defense- if you are serious about it- this is the book for you. This book is in my all-time top ten of coaching resources!

Coaching System Ball and the Double Goal Coach
By Jack P
The Postive Coaching Alliance has a program for coaching entitled Double Goal Coach. Well, Doug Porter and Gary Smith's tome on Coaching the System really provides a great method for implementing many of the stated goals of the PCA Double Goal Coach program while still allowing for the flexibility of individual team personnel.

There has not been a better read on the merits of fast break basketball with full court pressure defense utilizing platoons since Coach Arseneault's book entitled The Running Game: A Formula for Success.

This is a very well researched and thought out approach to coaching "team" basketball and maximizing the amount of player participation. Every School Administrator and AD should consider this book required reading. I am indebted to both of these fine Educators for this work!

A MUST FOR RUN AND GUN COACHES
By Deanna Bradley
I've met the authors and they really know what they are talking about. If you want to play 94 x 50 (or 84 x 50 high school) run and gun and press defense, this is well worth the purchase.

MKB42, MP43, MP44 and the Sturmgewehr 44 (The Propaganda Photo Series), by Guus de Vries, Bas Martens

The fourth volume of the Propaganda Photo Series, a unique series of books on World War II small arms. Each volume covers all essential information on history & development, ammunition & accessories, codes & markings and contains photos of nearly every model and accessory.

The most important quality of the Propaganda Photo Series however, is a unique selection of original German World War II propaganda photos, most never published before. The combination of solid information and original photos makes the Propaganda Photo Series the most extensive and reliable source of German small arms "in-use", depicting the weapons and equipment as they were actually used.

The Sturmgewehr is the mother of all assault rifles and a major step in the development of the modern firearm. It combined low production costs with special ammunition, resulting in a cheap but a very effective full-automatic rifle. Fortunately, development and adoption was delayed by Hitler's objections, thus limiting the amount of guns that actually reached the front.

This book is OK but not as good as a reference book as "Sturmgewehr" by Hans-Dieter Handrich. Some good photos but not as deep in reference information.

Art, Emotion and Ethics, by Berys Gaut

Art, Emotion, and Ethics is a systematic investigation of the relation of art to morality, a topic that has been of central and recurring interest to the philosophy of art since Plato. Berys Gaut explores the various positions that have been taken in this debate, and argues that an artwork is always aesthetically flawed insofar as it possesses a moral defect that is aesthetically relevant. Three main arguments are developed for this view; these involve showing how moral goodness is itself a kind of beauty, that artworks can teach us about morality and that this is often an aesthetic merit in them, and that our emotional responses to works of art are properly guided in part by moral considerations.

Art, Emotion, and Ethics also contains detailed interpretations of a wide range of artworks, including Rembrandt's Bathsheba and Nabokov's Lolita, which show that ethical criticism can yield rich and plausible accounts of individual works. Gaut develops a new theory of the nature of aesthetic value, explores how art can teach us about the world and what we morally ought to do by guiding our imaginings, and argues that we can have genuine emotions towards people and events that we know are merely fictional.

Characterised by its clarity and sustained argument, this book will be of interest to anyone who wants to understand the relation of art to morality.

Is a work of art affected by its ethical instantiations?
By R. Soucy
Art, Emotion and Ethics is a nice condensed work. In it, Berys Gaut defends what he calls Ethicism. "Ethicism holds that [an artistic] work is aesthetically flawed in so far as it possesses an aesthetically relevant ethical flaw and aesthetically meritorious in so far as it possesses an aesthetically relevant ethical merit. The ethical flaws referred to are intrinsic ethical flaws, not the ethically bad effects that works may have on actual audiences. Intrinsic ethical flaws are ethical flaws in the attitudes that works manifest towards their subjects. So ethicism holds that works are aesthetically flawed in so far as they exhibit aesthetically relevant ethical flaws in their manifested attitudes." (229)

Gaut contrasts this view with what he takes to be the only plausible competing views, atuonomism and contextualism. Typically, the debate is set up as one between moralists, immoralists and autonomists, but Gaut thinks these labels are misleading.

Ethicism is the monotonic positive relation. All works are aesthetically flawed in so far as they contain an ethical demerit that is aesthetically relevant and all works have aesthetic merit in so far as they contain an aesthetically relevant moral merit. This is the "full-blooded" version. A weaker version can hold that a work is always aesthetically flawed in so far as it has some aesthetically relevant ethical flaw, but a work does not always have aesthetic merit in so far as it has an aesthetically relevant ethical merit.

The extreme immoralist position is that an artwork is always aesthetically flawed in so far as it contains some aesthetically relevant ethical merit and always has an aesthetic merit in so far as it contains an aesthetically relevant ethical flaw. Some weaker version of this monotonic relationship is possible as well.

No one has ever truly defended extreme immoralism, so Gaut decides to put it to the side.

Full-blooded contextualism is the pure polytonic view, this is that an artwork sometimes has an aesthetic merit in so far as it contains some aesthetically relevant ethical merit as well as sometimes has an aesthetic merit in so far as it contains some aesthetically relevant ethical flaw. It also maintains that an artwork is sometimes aesthetically flawed in so far as it contains an aesthetically relevant ethical flaw as well as sometimes aesthetically flawed in so far as it contains some aesthetically relevant ethical merit.

Gaut believes that this leaves three relevant options: ethicism, contextualism, and autonomism. Moderate moralism either reduces to contextualism or is incomplete, and no one maintains extreme immoralism, so a plausible immoralist theory will be contextual.

Gaut divides contextualism into three types: ethicist contextualism, immoralist contextualism, and neutral contextualism. Ethical contextualism will explain the value inversion as a result under the background of a positive relation. So when some ethical demerit is an aesthetic merit, it is explained as a deviance from the normal positive relation. Perhaps some ethical flaw being treated humorously will be an aesthetic merit in so far as it is treated in the way it is. Immoralist contextualism has a character of negative relation. What results in a positive relation is a deviance from the character background of negative relation. So when an ethical flaw is an aesthetic flaw, it is only that way as a deviance from the norm. Perhaps this can be attributed to the fact that an ethical flaw fails to result in a transgression. The final, neutral contextualism, does not have a basic positive or negative character. This is harder to defend as there are no principles on which to base the value inversions.

When I initially started this book, I counted myself as an autonomist but now I would say I am sympathetic to an ethical contextualist view, yet it is important to say why autonomism has its appeal. For those interested, I think Thomas Scanlon's discussion meaning and blame in Moral Dimensions: Permissibility, Meaning, Blame is helpful in this area. Following Scanlon, an act is ethically impermissible if some deliberative employment of some principle rules out that action. This is rarely the case for works of art (though it still may be, perhaps the attempt to morally corrupt its audience), more often one wants to focus on the meaning of some action or artwork. The meaning is distinct from its being ethical, but it is significant. If some artwork glorifies rape, for instance, this may not be ethically wrong, and thus not an ethical flaw under deliberative employment of some principle or attitude, but it does have a certain meaning between the work/artist with its audience/other rational agents. Perhaps here, when one is presented with such a meaning, one may modify one's attitudes to that work or artist. Thus the flaw in critical employment may equate to an aesthetic or artistic flaw.

On this notion, we can rephrase the general question of the book, "Can one modify one's relations to a work of art or artist if the critical employment of some principle is flawed within the work or artist?"

This at once makes the particular question less mysterious and the moralization of art more plausible, as well as making the issue much more complicated. Now we seem to have two domains of inquiry. That of a flaw of deliberative employment in some artwork and that of a flaw of critical employment in some artwork. A positive answer to the latter will likely entail a positive answer to the former, but a positive answer to the former does not necessarily entail a positive answer to the latter.

Gaut himself wishes to defend the view that artworks in manifesting a certain ethical attitude by the artist can literally be judged based on ethical standards. To my mind, something like Scanlon's notion of meaning makes all of this more comprehensible and in a sense, dissolves the autonomist position all together.

With this out of the way, we can review some of the main arguments of the book. In order to respond to some objections to ethicism, Gaut defends a plausible version of moral principles as pro tanto. A pro tanto principle is the 'in so far as' relation. For example, an action may be morally good in so far as it is a promise, and morally bad in so far as it is a failure to help someone in need. If I make a promise to be somewhere by a certain time, but arrive late because I decided to help someone in need, my action is morally good in so far as I helped the person, but I still owe an apology for breaking my promise in so far as I made the promise. It would overall be a morally good act despite the badness of breaking the promise. Conversely, I could decide to keep my promise and not help that person, but though my action would be morally good in so far as I kept the promise, it would be morally bad in so far as I failed to help the person. It would then be overall morally bad because the failure to help someone in need is a greater wrong than breaking a promise in this case.

Gaut believes that the pro tanto principles properly respond to the inseparability objection. It may be true that there is an ethical flaw and that making it an ethical merit would overall make it aesthetically worse, but it still is aesthetically flawed in the pro tanto sense in so far as it has the ethical flaw.

Gaut uses the pro tanto position to solve many more difficulties as well, making it a powerful tool in his ethicist arsenal. Unfortunately, it alone is not enough to support the theory. To do this, Gaut proposes three main arguments: the moral beauty argument, the cognitive argument, and the merited response argument; none of which I take to be successful.

First, Gaut wants to improve Colin McGinn's suggestion of moral beauty as supervenient by defining a strong biconditional version and a weak sufficiency conditional version. The strong goes: a quality is a moral virtue iff it is a beautiful character trait and a quality is a moral vice iff it is an ugly character trait. However, it's a bit of a stretch to claim that virtues are beautiful and vices ugly. Virtue and vice as concepts are more gradient than the concepts of beauty and uglyness which are polar. Some things can be more beautiful than others and/or uglier than others, but there really is not a place (or even a vague region) where these concepts meet. The same is not true of virtue and vice. There can often be a fine line between them, however vague. If this is true, then there should be some virtues which are not beautiful though also not ugly, perhaps they can just be good or appropriate. Likewise for vices, they may not be ugly, but they may be bad or inappropriate. Even here, one can assume that a virtue in some context may be inappropriate and a vice appropriate. So the most we can say is that some moral virtues are beautiful and some vices ugly, but being a virtue is not sufficient for being beautiful and being a vice is not sufficient for being ugly. This would invalidate even the weak claim.

The second argument doesn't fare much better either. The cognitive argument claims that the knowledge manifested in an artwork as the understanding of the artist can teach. It does this by the artists understanding being an imaginative type of knowledge. He also seems to suppose that since knowledge is justified true belief (along with some further condition to satisfy Gettier type problems), and that for knowledge to be taught through a work it must at minimum be true. But consider fiction. Some set of facts may be true in the fiction, yet untrue in the real world. Of course, this is not what Gaut means. But in the same way something is true in fiction but not in reality, something can be true from a particular frame of reference but not in reality. This of course is not knowledge, but it is understanding and consistent with the idea of a manifested understanding of an artist in an artwork.

It seems to me that at best the argument allows knowledge of ethical principles in the real world, but that an artwork may also present an ethical truth from a particular framework. This would not then be a support for full-blooded ethicism. It may however support ethical contextualism. This may also help to establish what types of conditions allow for value-inversion. An ethical demerit is an aesthetic merit in so far as it is ethically meritorious from the particular ethical frame of reference. This may seem to leave the matter entirely open so that any quality which has some bearing on any possible ethical system will be an aesthetic merit. I do not think this is the case. What we can instead say is that given the actual normative moral system, or set of plausible moral systems, an aesthetically relevant ethical demerit of an artwork is an aesthetic merit in so far as it is an ethical merit from the particular frame of reference manifested in the work by the artist which has some relevant positive relation to the set of plausible moral systems.

Say some work is completely bleak and nihilistic, but that this nihilism is motivated by humanistic concerns. The bleakness can be an aesthetic merit. Gaut will wish to explain this same phenomenon with his pro tanto notion, but I do not think it is appropriate to do so. What he would claim is that there are two moral qualities, one positive and one negative where the positive wins over the negative. But I want to say that it is this very bleakness that makes it aesthetically meritorious. It is underwritten by a humanity which it shares with all plausible moral frameworks, but its humanism would be an aspect intimate with its own framework. Outside of it, it would not appear to be humanist at all. One would not be mistaken given the set of premises that the humanism one wishes to endorse leads to a bleak picture. This is what makes it different. I would say the writing of Louis-Ferdinand Cline fit this type of analysis. The pro tanto attempts to explain the same thing, but it adds an unnecessary qualification.

The third, and final, argument for ethicism is the merited response argument. Gaut first plausibly defends the idea that one can have genuine rational affective responses to an artwork. I find his treatment of this thoroughly satisfying. However, the merited response argument assumes that artworks prescribe responses. Though this is reasonable enough (e.g. a horror movie may prescribe a fear response, or a joke a humor response). The difficulty lies in whether this aspect is a feature intrinsic to the work, or the actual transmission of the response to the audience. It is not entirely clear which Gaut supports. In some instances it is the former, in others the latter. But both have difficulties Gaut skims over. If the prescribed response is internal, it is difficult to say what grounds its evaluation. If no one reacts as it intends an audience to react, it cannot be judged a failure since this would be merely coincidental. The grounds one evaluates the prescriptive response must be cognitivist, then. But if the merited response argument rests on the cognitive argument and the cognitive argument fails, the merited response argument fails as well. If, on the other hand, it is based on an audiences actual response, if no one responds as the work intends, it is an aesthetic failure. In some ways this is plausible, but it is not something I would wish to endorse. If a comedian conceives of a joke and does not tell it, is it not funny? But shouldn't the joke be funny in the first place for it to even produce a humor response?

Although I do not think his arguments go through, Gaut's book is a fantastic exercise in thinking ethically about art. His treatments clarify and otherwise murky subject. And though I have not been convinced of ethicism, I nevertheless found much use in the arguments presented throughout the book to refine my own views which I would be happy to label as ethical contextualism. And as one who began this book with autonomist leanings, this was no mean feat. This is a highly recommended work, if you are interested in the ethical dimensions of aesthetics or just aesthetics in general.

Beautiful Presentation Problematic Information
By Douglas H. Hunter
While the visual presentation of the book is impressive, there is too much misleading, or only partially correct information here. I was looking for an advanced stretching guide and this is not it. Here are a few of the problems with the book:

1- There is a lot missing. For example, one of the challenges of stretching the shoulders and chest is that some muscles in those areas are quite difficult to stretch. Rather than addressing that difficulty these muscles are simply omitted. There are no stretches presented for the muscles that form the rotator cuff. P 38 has a picture of an arm holding a weight but there is no discussion of how to make this an effective stretch. The important thing for the Infraspinatus and Supraspinatus of the rotator cuff is inward rotation of the Humerus. If this is discussed in the book I can't find it. Additionally, the Serratus anterior isn't even mentioned; and there are no effective stretches for the Subscapularis or Pectorals minor in the book. It does state on page 47 that the stretch pictured "stretches all the chest muscles and the front of the shoulder" I would say this is misleading because just using that position does not assure a proper stretch of the Pec minor. This is a problem with attempting to use a single stretch to target several muscles, a single position is going to stretch some muscles better than others and some muscles might not get stretched at all.

In advocating for specific stretches its important to take into account the origin and insertion of the muscles, otherwise stretching will be less effective. Examples of suboptimal stretches can be found in several places in this book, here are just a few examples: The stretches for the extensors of the wrist and fingers (p. 56) are not as effective as they could be because the fingers are not flexed. Further, since some flexors and extensors of the writs and fingers cross the elbow having their origins on the Humerus; stretches for these muscles need to be performed with the elbow straight. Thus the "praying hands" position (p. 55) is not the best stretch, nor is the "standing version with fingers pointing down" (p. 56) as they are both performed with bent elbows. The stretches on p. 54 and 55 performed seated or kneeling also have problems. On page 54 the fingers are somewhat flexed, but to perform the stretch properly the fingers really need to be straight. On p. 55 the hands are positioned out in front of the body rather than along side the body. This makes it more difficult to control the amount of stretch. Finally, in the diagrams of the forearms the Flexor digitorum profoundus and Flexor digitorum superficialis are omitted, thus the primary muscles that the flexor stretches target are not even mentioned.

2- Although it was published in 2010 there is information included here that is considered obsolete by some experts. For example, there are several places where the book advocates stretching prior to activity, but the research does not seem to support this widely held belief. Athletes who stretch prior to activity perform no better than those who do not, and injury rates are similar for stretches and non-stretchers alike. (Dynamic stretching may be an exception to this) Also, there are a number of activities shown here that stretch muscles that are being contracted. Stretching and contracting are opposite actions and it's not helpful to attempt to stretch a contracting muscle. Thus all the standing stretches for the hamstrings (there are a good number of them in the book) are not going to be as effective as seated stretches. I know that standing hamstring stretches are very common, but since the hamstrings are "anti-gravity" muscles -they have to contract to keep us in a standing position- better stretching technique is achieved when doing seated stretches.

3- The vocabulary is odd at times. It seems like the authors or the translators (this is a translation of a French title) could not make up their minds regarding the use of correct anatomical terms. Readers used to accepted anatomical language might be surprised to see odd language used to describe things that are easier to describe using the standard vocabulary. I do understand that authors are concerned with making books on anatomy accessible to readers. But it only takes a few minutes to learn the meanings of terms like proximal and distal, superior and inferior etc. So why not just do what most other books do and include a few diagrams in the beginning that show the meanings of these terms?

4- If you have even a little exposure to stretching, then there is a good chance that you already know, and have performed many of the stretches in this book; and you won't have insights as to how to perform them better after reading it. There are ways to do these stretches much more effectively but that information is not presented here. This despite the fact that some headings state that the stretch pictured is "advanced." Sadly, the text often omits the details of how and why to make the stretch advanced.

I am going to say that this title is not a good text to use on its own. I am sure the illustrations will be beneficial to many, but really this book needs to be paired with a good kinesiology text such as Anatomy of Movement, or Manual of Structural Kinesiology.

The Human Body - Revealed!
By Brenda Frank
I love Delavier's books and own both "Strength Training Anatomy" and "Strength Training Anatomy for Women." "Stretching Anatomy" is just as useful as the strength training books. The key to the success of these books is the detailed anatomical drawings of the human body, without skin, used to explain the effect of exercises and stretches on specific muscles. Any stretching or exercise is easier and better if you understand the hows and whys.

These books are prescriptions for achieving results. For example, the section on the back (meaning the spine), depicts and explains reasons for lower back pain, how to prevent it, and how to relax the back with various stretches.

Delavier uses the correct (Latin) names for the muscles, with anatomical diagrams and color photos to illustrate each movement. Both male and female models demonstrate the stretches.

In addition to basic positions, many of the stretches have advanced and very advanced positions. Delavier includes "WARNING!" where needed to explain possible negative effects. For instance, the section on necks states, in part: "Warning! Since the cervical vertebrae are small but have great mobility, it is easy to injure them. . . "

"Stretching Anatomy" is very complete. The first section, "A User's Manual" explains the reasons for stretching, types of stretches, breathing, and stretching for athletes. The next section describes the stretches for all parts of the body. Devalier concludes with stretching programs for all levels: beginners, intermediates, and advanced. Then, he covers stretching programs for various sports: golf, running, soccer, skating, skiing, combat sports, cycling, throwing sports, horseback riding, swimming and bodybuilding.

Don't be scared by the intro section with the photo of a women who could be a contortionist in Cirque du Soleil. "Stretching Anatomy" is useful for people at all levels of fitness. We all need to stretch.

Good info...nicely applied
By R. H. Hollwedel
The book mixes detailed anatomical art with color photography to depict stretches for all body regions. It inlcudes some background on why certain exersices should be done, as well as some basic overall principles. While the level of content and range of stretching exercises seems fine for the individual looking for general fitness/wellness help, the book may be more valuable yet for the athlete (weekend or serious), as the last section of the book is devoted to stretching routines that are geared toward specific types of sports activities. In addition to listing and picturing individual recommended stretches in this last section, it also refers the reader back to the page where detailed instructions for each stretch are located. A nice touch for anyone who is using the book with sports performance in mind.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up–Though it covers a broad range of topics, this textbook-style survey suffers from arid, passive-voice prose and inadequate indexing–a bad combination for a general reference resource. An opening pair of chapters covering the early history of physics is followed by 13 others, each taking up a single class of phenomena, from Translational Motion and Heat to Quantum Physics and Relativity. Myers closes with instructions for two dozen simple experiments and a brief look at careers in the physical sciences. He keeps the focus steadily on classical physics; students researching such cutting-edge topics as superstring theory, superconductivity, or quantum entanglement will find little or nothing here, and even subjects that are discussed in some detail–quark flavors and colors, for example–are not picked up in the skimpy index. In addition, several entries in the multimedia resource list are more than 20 years old. The text is supplemented by frequent equations, charts, and diagrams, plus the occasional drab black-and-white graphic. Libraries already owning an upper-level science encyclopedia, either online or in multiple volumes, will only find this useful as, at best, a supplementary resource.–John Peters, New York Public Library

Review
"Myers has written, for the Basics of the Hard Sciences series, an introductory book for students with a broad prospective. The basics of classical, quantum, and nuclear physics, as well as relativity, are discussed with many diagrams and tables for the uninitiated. A section is provided with physics experiments that are simple enough for most high school students. Myers offers a brief history of the theories and facts presented, something missing in many science works. There is also a brief introduction to the field of physics as a career, possibly encouraging a student to study further. Finally, the book contains a fairly handy glossary, table of elements, conversion tables, selected bibliography, and good index. Recommended. General readers; lower-division undergraduates." - Choice

"The text is well written, minimizes the math presented, gives good descriptions of the concepts, and includes interesting historical accounts of the developments in the various fields of physics." - SB&F

"After reviewing the history of physics and its founders, this introductory textbook explains the basic principles of mechanics, motion, work, energy, heat, matter, vibration and waves, light, electricity, magnetism, and modern physics. A glossary and 25 simple experiments are provided." - SciTech Book News

Amazing history of St Mary's GAA club
By Brendan Flood
Excellent book !!! This book is an amazing collection of article, stories, pictures and historical perspectives of the St Mary's GAA club over their 125 year history. I couldn't put it down when I started reading it. It documents in great detail the highs and lows of each year of the club (and county) over that span. It also provides a view into the social landscape of the country over the years and how it affected the club. A lot of the match reports were pulled from old newspaper clippings just as they were written back then. The book is WONDERFUL for any GAA fan. I would highly recommend it!!

Fight the King's Indian, Gr Nfeld, and Dutch Defenses with Zuka, a Stand-Alone, Cohesive Chess Opening System (Includes the Dangerfield Att

Nearly a century ago, Aron Nimzowitsch instigated a revolution in chess strategy, claiming a player need not occupy the center to control it. The popularity and strength of the King's Indian Defense, which invites White to build a center that Black can attack, has demonstrated the value of this hypermodern style.

But what if White refuses to play along? What if White plays for both space and development without giving Black a target?

David Rudel, author of the tremendously popular Zuke 'Em, presents a cohesive, plug-and-play system against repertoires based on a K-side fianchetto (e.g., the King's Indian, Grunfeld, and Dutch). He shows how White can turn hypermodern defense on its head by refusing to let Black utilize his early development advantage, putting the onus on the second player to justify his lack of space.

This integrated system, which Rudel nicknamed Zuka, can be incorporated into any traditional 1.d4 repertoire, whether White intends 2.c4 or 2.Nf3. Note that Zuka contains the entirety of Rudel's work on the Dangerfield Attack. The Dangerfield Attack sub-portion of this book has been published concurrently as a separate book (Dismantle the Dutch with the Dangerfield Attack), but the two books have the same content with respect to the Dutch defense.

ZUKA: an essential book for 1.d4 players.
By S. McLemore
David Rudel's recent book ZUKA (2012) advances and enlarges his original, highly innovative, program for revitalizing the Colle System. This attractive program commenced with Zuke `Em (2008), an exciting presentation of a new approach to the Colle-Zukertort variation. Rudel's writing style and Socratic teaching method are aimed primarily at class players.

Zuke `Em was followed in rapid-fire succession by two additional books (2009) expanding Rudel's original analysis of the Colle-Zukertort (CZ) variation. He subsequently expanded the analysis further still to include a highly-promising new line, the Phoenix Attack, that may be played in both the CZ variation and the main line of the Colle-Koltanowski (CK) variation (2011); and now, with ZUKA this imaginative analyst has expanded his perspective from its focus on the Colle to include all other 1.d4 openings.

Most authors of repertoire books give little attention to the strongest replies by black. Rudel, in contrast, has tackled head-on the weaknesses of both variations of the Colle system and has shown the strengths of many of the defenses that a Colle player is likely to encounter. For instance, in Zuke `Em he devoted forty-seven pages to the two main lines of the CZ and then used the next one hundred and seventeen pages making suggestions as to how players with the white pieces should meet the most likely "pet defenses" they would face! This method of teaching is, in my view, vastly superior to the usual one-sided approach.

Up to now, however, nearly all Colle System advocates (including until now Rudel also) have advised players who face such defenses as the Kings Indian Defense (KID) the Dutch, and the Grunfeld to switch from the Colle set-up to a different opening system. Even George Koltanowski--the man who first taught Americans how to play the Colle--adopted this recommendation. Rudel, in contrast, now proposes novel ways to expand his previous analyses for attacking the "pet defenses" to include the most highly-tested Colle-killing defenses.

His recommended set-up for white is not new (white's pawns at e3, d4, and c4, with his two knights at f3 and c3). What is new is, first, Rudel's demonstration of how the 1.d4 player may use this set-up when facing a high-powered defense, such as the KID, a defense that has weathered the test of time in Grandmaster practice, as well as in the play of class players; second, his analysis is an extension of, rather than a departure from, his previous recommendations and, thus, may be learned more easily than if a player had to start over; and third, he has suggested a convenient name--Zuka--to identify this set-up and to simplify writing about it.

In my opinion, the analyses presented in ZUKA offer class players who prefer 1.d4 better chances than ever before to win against the most successful Colle-killing defenses (as well as many "pet defenses" without having to learn specialized attacks devoted to each of those defenses. The continuity between Rudel's previous recommendations for Colle players and those recommended in this book enables all 1.d4 players to simplify their preparation without sacrificing their winning chances. Although this book was written primarily for class players, some of its suggestions should be of interest also to experts and masters.

A Great Resource
By Alchemist of Manville
I find this book, Fight the King's Indian, Grunfeld and Dutch Defenses with ZUKA very useful. I play OnLine and at a local club. The author describes a system for the white pieces that can be adjusted to respond appropriately to the King's Indian, Grunfeld, Benoni and Dutch Defenses. This book is a great companion to Zuke'Em (The Colle-Zukertort or Rubinstein Opening) also by David Rudel. With these two books you have a great store house of many lines and variations to handle most anything that black may throw your way. The font is large and content easy to read. David takes you through critical moments and explains possible alternative approaches to the various lines, and he does it all with a sense of humor. 'Knock on wood', playing the white pieces I have 73% wins, 9% draws and 18% loses at Online chess since January 2013 with these materials as a resource, There is a support website and forum where you can get the latest thoughts and updates on the various lines described in the books. Thanks to David Rudel for sharing his enthusiasm and expertise so we can improve our game. Strongly recommended!

pretty extensive of coverage of queen pawn openings

not a book for beginners. pretty extensive of coverage of queen pawn openings, transposition technique, methods of handling various indian defences, and strongly pushes the'barry attack', which i think is fairly suspect at higher levels, and incorporates the 'dangerfield attack' which i think is quite intriguing as a plan to counter the dutch defence
