Amazon.com Review
"One of the real tests of writers," notes Ackerman in this liveliest of nature books, "is how well they write about smells. If they can't describe the scent of sanctity in a church, can you trust them to describe the suburbs of the heart?" Ackerman passes the test, writing with ease and fluency about the five senses. Did you know that bat guano smells like stale Wheat Thins? That Bach's music can quell anger around the world? That the leaves that shimmer so beautifully in fall have "no adaptive purpose"? Ackerman does, and she guides us through questions of sensation with an eye for the amusingly arcane reference and just the right phrase.

From Publishers Weekly
Physiology and philosophy mesh in this poetic investigation of the five senses; essays explore synesthesia, food taboos, kissing and the power and diversity of music. "Rooted in science, enlivened by her own convincing sense of wonder, Ackerman's essays awaken us to a fresh awareness," said PW.

From School Library Journal
YA-- An exciting multidiscipline book that crosses the lines of literature, history, anthropology, music, psychology, sociology, and philosophy and that flows with grace and reason. The theme is expressed in such a way as to draw readers into experiential thought and, therefore, impacts heavily upon the way one looks at the issue of sensing and its role for humanity. It is sure to raise readers' consciousness level while providing researched and analyzed information on this topic. In addition, the language is clear and concise, which makes the book valuable to a large cross section of readers. The generous use of cultural and historical examples adds to the readability.

Somehow beyond words :)
By Lana
I am very specific when it comes to what I read.
These are the reasons/pros for buying this book:
1. Heard of Diane, but never read her books and heard this is one of her top books
2. I love descriptive & realistic books that take my mind into a blissful state
3. Not long and unbearable in length or tone
4. Amazing diction (choice of wording) that you'll literally want to quote so many parts of this book
5. Okay, there seriously isn't any other book that made me feel like this...

This author is now my favorite and I will be reading her other books. This is ironically beyond words. I am not sure how she does it, but somehow really makes you feel and doesn't quite make me realise I'm just reading a book.

I highly recommend, even if you're not a big reader.

A welcome feast for the senses
By Darby
{Review writte in July 2004}

I read A Natural History of the Senses back in 1991, when it first came out ...

If you're an aspiring writer, if you enjoy meditation and/or sensory deprivation (or other activities designed to heighten your sensory awareness), or even if you're just an unpracticed closet sensualist eager for new experiences, then do not walk ... RUN ... run out and by this book. Better still, click on our "Buy Books" link, locate it, and select overnight shipment. You'll thank me for it.

Yes, it really is THAT good.

Ackerman gives us a first hand tour de force overview of our 5 bodily senses, from the historical, scientific, philosophical, artistic and literary vantagepoints. With the giddy delight of someone with a rapt attention for fine details, not to mention a true gift for words, she takes us on a rich journey of the subtle and the sublime ... from the musky scent of fire-warmed leather, to the plaintive cry of a lonely loon hidden in the misty wilderness, to the rousing plushness of crushed velvet, to the crisp-tart taste of muscat grapes plucked straight from their sun-ripened vines.

No need for me to wax poetic, because that's what this work is all about ... it's a master class in understanding the senses we use to percieve the world itself.

Sure, there are people out there who think that books like this are just lightweight literary fluff ... such people reveal themselves to be the same undiscerning people who are blindly content to live on fast food slop, who never stop to relax and fully appreciate a beautiful sunset, and who mechanically motor off into the rat race without pausing for a long moment to nuzzle in the musky warmth of their lover's neck and hair, and to beam love for a long languid moment into their mate's eyes. For those cannot appreciate the subtleties such things, I feel nothing but pity. Go right ahead and wallow in your detached mediocrity ... and whatever you do, do NOT buy this book, because it'll only upset you to realize all the things you've been missing out on all these years. You've been living your life in the lowest possible resolution, and you have nobody to blame but yourself.

Anyway, this book is easily one of the most enjoyable and satisfying books I've read to date.

Diane Ackerman - A Natural history of the Senses
By Robert
Diane Ackermann: A Natural History of the Senses

Diane Ackerman with non-fictional work.
A Natural History of the Senses is a nonfictional piece of work sharing a wide view of all the five senses for eploring the world. Describing about the common situations when sensing the world and explaining how these senses work, Ackerman expands the perception of the senses.

”My take”
The book is about humen, sensing the world through their five senses. Ackerman accomplishes to expand the readers ideas about senses. With an incredible amount of knowledge and thoughts almost like from the different planet, the book succeed to suprise even the most experienced readers.
The book handles all the senses one at the time with a wide variety of perspectives. One might say that the text loses its plot from time to time floating from a subject to another through a long path of thoughts. However, actually it is the best ability of the book of being different than any other novel. The text sucks the reader to its world with extremely detailed describing about experiences and feelings through aforisms, ideas, examples, and explanations of thefunctions of the senses. Five chapters and five senses in the book. One by one the texts discusses about every area what could be imagined when talking about senses in a scientifict and a secular point of view.

The colorfulness of the text is one of the main reasons, why this book succeeds to force a reader to imagine, go back to their own experiences and enjoy these feelings all over again.
There is no doubt that this piece would leave some-one cold with its rich scheme and colorful language. It might be hard to follow the thoughts from time to time, sometimes the text feels like brainstorming, and the message might be under the rock, but with immersing to the book with full passion the message comes out. Every chapter differs from another with their structures, which makes the reading experience to be enjoyable, altought, I had to concentrate sometimes to see the complete analogy. It was very hard to be critical because the book was written with great skill. What is the source of all this knowledge? Some of the arguments might be considered lacking important information or being just an individual experiences not shared by every person, for example one thing that got me was ”the one sure thing I learned about sophomore boys is that they’re all decibel and testosterone” (Ackerman, p. 186). This is just a generalization followed by other feelings about their music and taste, of which didn’t occur to her.

All in all I believe that with precise describing and new kinds of ideas this is a great work, a master piece that doesn’t have compeers. The book had a influence on me by opening my world to new kind of sensing. I would definitely reccommend to read this book wether just for fun or to see a complete thought about humen sensing the world around between the green colored covers.

Clever British comedy that will leave you smiling!
By Nancee 123
If you are a fan of the ever witty and clever British humor, then this is the perfect read for you. If you are considering a play for community theatre, look no further. ‟Lettice and Lovage‟ is a beautiful bit of work by author Peter Shaffer using only four characters, who may also play the few minor roles.

The play centers around a somewhat eccentric middle-aged woman whose vivid imagination makes an otherwise mind numbing job as a tour guide in an old British 16th century Hall become a tour de force presentation. The longer she fulfills this job, the more extravagant the lifestyle details of the deceased owners of the old home become. Then you throw in a gloomy, regimented boss in need of some light-hearted moments in her dreary existence, include a mousy secretary, a confused lawyer, and the fun just escalates. All leading to a very unexpected conclusion!

I highly recommend this play as a great escape, some good laughs, and an author taking a few tongue in cheek swipes at some very old British institutions. It's brilliant and marvelous!

Writing good comedy is difficult
By Scott
Writing good comedy is difficult, and writing of this caliber is exceptionally rare. While many of the best dramas are punctuated with humor, this play is a fine example of a comedy punctuated with moments of arresting drama and poignant pathos. I was fortunate enough to see this performed on Broadway by the inimitable Maggie Smith, and I have to believe that Peter Shaffer wrote it with her in mind. Too bad there is no video record of this stage production. Some plays are slices of life; this one is a slice of cake! Bon apetit.

How to read and write chemistry (for the university student)
By Craig MACKINNON
This book is meant to be a practical guide in reading and writing chemistry. There are numerous practical tidbits interspersed throughout the book. There are also exercises (many of which include "peer review" style discussion among classmates) and numerous examples (both positive and negative). The topics range from reading the primary literature through writing lab reports and even to giving oral seminars.
The authors do a good job straddling the line between keeping the text short (this is a "Short Guide" after all), while providing the essential kernals of information. Unfortunately, it reads a bit like a how-to guide for someone trying to get an "A" grade in their "Writing in Chemsitry" course. There is little discussion of format variations (except possibly in the "Writing a Research Proposal" section) probably not the author's fault, more of a page constraint issue. However, I would like to have seen less on, say "How to keep a freshman lab book" (17 pages!) and more on, "How to give an oral presentation." Surely the target audience should be the upper-year student, not the freshman.
If the biggest problem is the formulaic presentation, the best aspect is the numerous examples interspersed throughout the book. I was pleased to note that the examples, at least, are chosen to highlight the differences in scientific opinion that constantly arise and that younger scientists find baffling. Because science is generally taught as hard facts in high school, there is no indication that science is actually a refining process where theories are put to the test, elevated, or destroyed as work is done to test their validity. This process is amply demonstrated by the authors, in a wide variety of subdisciplines, all of which are fun to read, even for professors and other chemical professionals.
Therefore, I recommend this book for the senior undergraduate and graduate student who wants to refine/develop their scientific writing style. I'm skeptical about recommending the book to freshmen, in spite of the number of pages devoted to freshman topics, because I'm not as happy with those chapters.

Writing About Chemistry
By Regina Sartin
In A Short Guide to Writing about Chemistry Herbert Beall and John Trimbur describe how to write in chemistry. Beall is an expert in writing books about chemistry and Trimbur wrote books about reading and writing. With these two authors combined for one book, there was no doubt that this book would be a top seller. The book thoroughly discusses how to write research papers, literature reviews, critiques, persuasion essays, and lab reports. The book describes what chemists read and write about.
To understand chemistry you must find what is significant, make a model, and reason by analogy. The book describes how to read a chemistry textbook, study for tests or quizzes, and take lecture notes. All of these hints are good for a college student in chemistry.
The book gives step by step details as the chapter goes along. It gives good details for visual aids, and how to rehearse before delivering your speech if you have to do an oral presentation. The lab report chapter is very useful because it's not just enough to understand the concepts, but you must write out a lab report.
After the authors describe the steps to follow, they give an example and then practice problems. The book includes websites to look at for a chemistry article and good engines to use when searching for a certain chemistry concept.
The book covers so much information that any student at any level of study can understand the book. The book is designed mainly to get the students to communicate in the chemistry language either by writing, reading, or giving oral presentations. With all of the great things found in this book, it is no surprise that it was successful at helping students and professors alike in writing about chemistry.

The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde, by NEIL MCKENNA

Oscar Wilde said of himself, “I put all my genius into my life; I put only my talent into my work.” Now, for the first time, Neil McKenna focuses on the tormented genius of Wilde’s personal life, reproducing remarkable love letters and detailing Wilde’s until-now unknown relationships with other men.McKenna has spent years researching Wilde’s life, drawing on extensive new material, including never-before published poems as well as recently discovered trial statements made by male prostitutes and blackmailers about Wilde. McKenna provides explosive evidence of the political machinations behind Wilde’s trials for sodomy, as well as his central role in the burgeoning gay world of Victorian London. Dazzlingly written and meticulously researched, The Secret Life of Oscar Wilde fully charts Wilde’s astonishing odyssey through London’s sexual underworld and paints a frank and vivid psychological portrait of a troubled genius.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Oscar Wilde, though married to a woman, preferred sex with men; he was convicted of "gross indecency" and sentenced to two years of hard labor in 1895 in what has become a landmark case in queer history. Yet most biographies of the famous playwright and essayist touch only fleetingly on the writer's sexual history. McKenna's masterful, eminently readable new work takes a sharp, very productive turn in Wilde scholarship. While British journalist McKenna (On the Margins) comprehensively covers Wilde's literary and public career, his biography is organized around Wilde's sexuality as expressed in the sexual acts he performed, and on the centrality of his homosexuality to his identity and politics. Rather than limiting the account to trysts and encounters, McKenna opens new venues for understanding Wilde's life and work. McKenna has unearthed a wealth of new primary and secondary sources—the letters, journals, fiction and poetry of such 19th-century homosexual writers as J.A. Symonds and Ronald Gower—that he uses to paint a vivid and engrossing portrait of Uranian (as 19th-century homosexuals called themselves) life and culture in late Victorian England. McKenna's fundamental argument is that Wilde's sexual identity moved him to the center of a nascent movement to destigmatize and even promote homosexuality as an identity. McKenna writes that Wilde and his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, "were passionately, fiercely committed to the Cause... [and needed] to proclaim their sexual orientation to the world." Not even a great biography can explain everything about its subject's life—and certainly, despite the groundbreaking research here, this book will raise eyebrows as well as controversy. But it's also the most exciting and important Wilde scholarship to be published in decades. 16 pages of b&w photos. (May)

From Booklist
No one who has read anything about Wilde written in the past 20 years will be surprised by most of McKenna's revelations, especially the degree to which Wilde lived a barely disguised double life. If he was closeted at all, it was as if in a glass-walled shower stall. He is now Saint Oscar, pilloried by the philistines and martyr to the cause of sexual liberation. His tale--rising to literary eminence only to suddenly fall as low as Reading Gaol--remains astonishing and moving, and McKenna's passion, wit, and good research make it compelling reading. McKenna excels at revealing how and why his behavior so shocked heterosexual Victorians, and why the half-mad marquis of Queensberry, a devotee of physical culture and heterosexist male roles, would work so hard to bring Wilde down. McKenna also describes Wilde's complex emotional life with particular grace and pathos--it is hard not to tear up while McKenna recounts Wilde's miscalculated libel suit against Queensberry--and sympathetically maps Constance Wilde's dysfunctional, heartbreakingly empty marriage to Wilde. The Secret is Sex
By MJS
It's my own fault. I wanted to read a biography next, I scanned the biography offerings on Kindle, saw one about Oscar Wilde and clicked "Buy Now" instead of "free sample". So let me make something quite clear: the "secret life" in question is Oscar Wilde's sex life.

Neil McKenna makes the case that no single biography can do justice to the whole life of any subject and proceeds from here. He set out to tell the story of Oscar Wilde as a homosexual man in Victorian England and most else in Oscar's life takes a back seat to that. This isn't the book I set out to read but I'm not disappointed to have read it. Somewhere along the way I received the wisdom that Oscar Wilde was just another metrosexual Victorian man until Bosie (Lord Alfred Douglas) rolled onto the scene. McKenna makes it clear that was not the case.

There is a whiff about this book of "reclaiming" Oscar. Yes, I'm convinced Oscar was a gay man and I'm certainly interested in rereading some of his work in light of McKenna's interpretations of Dorian Gray and Willie Hughes. On the other hand: Who knew reading about another person's sex life in such detail could be a chore? When Bosie and Oscar aren't bedding rent boys or other fetching creatures, they're racking up charges at five star restaurants and hotels. Unfortunately, that's all they seem to do a lot of the time and it gets a little dull. Maybe it's the mindless promiscuity involved, maybe it's that I'm not a gay man or maybe my Puritan roots go stronger than I realize but by the time the bailiffs came for Oscar I admit I was relieved.

McKenna is a tad myopic. Anything and everything is examined for tell tale signs that Oscar was gay and writing for a gay audience. Not surprisingly, he always finds signs. From Dorian Grey - ok, that's an easy one - to the Happy Prince, McKenna will have you seeing hidden messages everywhere. Bless his heart there isn't an inanimate object in your house that isn't a "code word for" for "Uranian love" when McKenna's on the case. This can lead to some giggle-worthy interpretations, my favorite being the "persistent rumor" that Saint Sebastian wasn't shot through with a hundred arrows but gang-raped by the entire Praetorian Guard and bled to death. Where do you even start on a theory like that? I'll start with the fact that I've never, ever heard that before nor does it make a lot of sense especially since the fact that the "arrows" didn't kill Sebastian is one of the reasons he was made a saint. He was actually beaten to death. (Unless I'm once again behind on the rumors.)

Still, I can't write this book off as all agenda and no substance. McKenna does a create a compelling portrait of Oscar Wilde as a man who accepted his sexuality and genuinely loved Bosie. Now why he loved that mess of a human being is anyone's guess. Bosie may have been the cat's meow in his day but that's no excuse to letting him in the house. Selfish, bratty, vindictive, nasty, and way too interested in young boys, Bosie nearly single-handedly creates the scandal that destroys Oscar and then tops all this by going straight in later life. You'll be hard pressed not to side with Oscar friends who want to keep him away from this human wrecking ball.

This is an interesting book. Not the definitive biography of Oscar Wilde but an interesting exploration into a relatively unknown aspect of Victorian life. Just bear in mind that sometimes a cigar is a cigar even when the smoker in question is Oscar Wilde.

Gave me much info about gay sex encounters in London during the late 1800s. I appreciated the info on OW's time in prison. Recommend this book.

A page turner!
By Cheryl S.
I admit that I knew very little of Oscar Wilde when I chose this particular book, at random. What an excellent choice for a novice as well as a Wilde devotee! Not only did I appreciate the tragic love story of Oscar, Constance, and Bosie, but I also gained an insight into Victorian mores and political machinations. We apparently can't claim the corner on the market of corrupt zealots.
If you haven't read Mr. McKenna's work, you must. In the biography arena, this book is beyond the realm.
